Just when you thought you'd escaped the deadliest case of cabin fever ever immortalized on film, we may have to pack our backs for a return trip to the Overlook Hotel. Warner Brothers is looking at the possibility of producing a prequel to 1980's 'The Shining.' The original of course was based on the novel by Stephen King and was directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick. Jack Nicholson starred as a writer who takes a job as caretaker of an enormous, and very isolated hotel during their off-season, and slowly goes mad to the point that he tries to kill his wife and son. The prequel would focus, not surprisingly, on the events that transpired before the Torrance family arrived at The Overlook. According to a source at the studio, the film is sort of prenatal at this point; the idea is being toyed with, but it's not even officially listed as being in development yet.
A prequel to 'The Shining?' Heeeeeeere's...something needless. Like most horror fans, I have a great deal of reverence for Stanley Kubrick's original adaptation, and I do consider it to be among the scariest films of all time. However, what chiefly makes that movie work is Nicholson's Jack Torrance and his slow descent into madness. Doing a prequel immediately shackles the production with either A.) casting a different actor to play a younger version of Torrance, or B.) removing him from the equation entirely. No matter how you slice it, I'm just not interested without Nicholson, and there's no way he could reprise the role at present. Perhaps the prequel would be the story of Delbert Grady, the fabled former caretaker of The Overlook whose tragic story and murderous lunacy served as a chilling precursor to the fate of Jack's family. This would be a better approach, except that I would rather not know every detail and facet of that story. I don't want to know more about the creepy twin girl ghosts, they are creepy precisely because we know so little about them. Well that, and because they are twin girl ghosts.
What do you guys think? Could a 'Shinning' prequel work? Would you want to see it?

Comment by gorillahandz on July 31, 2012 at 4:44pm Fuck it, make it an anthology and show how various people throughout time have gone nutso on that piece of property. Though they will never do it since anthology movies don't make money.

Comment by Absinthe Minded on July 31, 2012 at 12:18am No there's no god, Ruben. But it's not because of a possible Shining prequel. There was never a god to begin with.
