Is "The Collector" doomed to follow the path of bad horror sequels?

Like many horror fans, I was overall impressed when I saw "The Collector" a few nights ago. When I first heard it was a film made by the people behind the last few "Saw" films, my first reaction was something like "well this will suck". Nothing could be further from the truth. Like Korey and Carlyle mentioned in the audio review, this movie is what the saw sequels SHOULD be. Why? Because they dont rely on blood and gore for all the scares. Does this film have all that? Yes, but it creates mood and atmosphere, and THAT is what makes it scary. The "cat and mouse" feel to it and unique interesting plot holds your attention throughout. Which raises the question, and the main reason why I am writing this blog: Will they have enough sense to leave it alone? Or will it fall down the path of terrible horror sequels and lose its credibility. To help you all understand what I mean, lets look at some examples from the past shall we?


Since these films are some what related to "The Collector", I'll start off with...Saw.

I know that this one can be debated, and that there are tons of people who hate the first saw, but in my opinion the first saw movie was a pretty solid horror film. Why? Because it left you guessing. All it was, was two guys in a bathroom, trying to piece together a very vague puzzle and survive. (SPOILERS AHEAD) As soon as you saw that "dead body" stand up off the bathroom floor at the end, thats all you ever really needed to know about jigsaw. It left you with enough questions and mysteries to keep you scared and filling in the rest of the blanks with your imagination.


Next... Halloween

Not much has to be said here. The first halloween, classic. The second one was alright but overall unnecessary. Eventually it got to the point where Michael Myers was cursed by some cult or something and getting beat up by... Busta Rymes? What?


And of course... Friday the 13th

It went from a very good first film, to Jason roaming the streets of Manhattan, to Jason reeking havoc in... Space?


As I said, thats just a few examples of a very common pattern with horror franchises, one that really needs to stop. So will "The Collector" fall to the same fate? Like Korey said about the Halloween remakes, you take away to much mystery and you take away alot of what makes a movie scary. Could a good Collector sequel be made? Sure, its possible. But the last thing I want to see is a movie explaining that the collector is the way he is, because he used to collect insects as a kid and had an abusive father and a prostitute mother.
