Is Ralph Fiennes The New M?
With 'Skyfall,' the 23rd James Bond film, fully in production, more plot details are beginning to surface that indicate this may be a major turning point for the franchise. At first, the hint was merely Ralph Fiennes coyly and cryptically making a statement regarding his character in the film. He said that all he was allowed to say was that he was playing a government agent. Then, someone at EON productions revealed something far more interesting about his role. **WARNING: SPOILER AHEAD** It seems that Fiennes will be playing an agent whose name we don't learn through the course of the film because he will eventually be replacing Judi Dench as M. Dench has been occupying the role of MI-6's head honcho, and Bond's boss, since 1995's 'GoldenEye.' Could this really be the end of her reign as queen bee?
I'm not sure if I buy this. Granted, Judi Dench is getting along in years and has been playing this character for a long time, so the moment seems ripe for her to make her exit. The original reporters of this story also seem very confident that their source is someone highly in the know at the studio. However I seem to remember a similarly highly-placed source a few months back telling us that Fiennes was to play one of the bad guys in the film. Let's assume for a moment that this source is accurate. I like the idea of Fiennes as M. He's got the right coolly severe demeanor and doesn't seem like the type who would put up with Bond's nonsense...making him the ideal candidate. I really enjoyed Dench as M. She proved to be more than just a gimmick, more than just "the female M." She was shrewd, punchy, and quite funny in an understated sort of way. If Fiennes does play a government agent in 'Skyfall,' all we have to do is keep our ears open and if they keep refusing to say his name throughout the film, it's a safe bet that he'll be getting behind the big desk by the end of the movie.
What do you guys think? Do you think Fiennes would make a suitable M?

I'd hate to see Dench go, but I'd be okay seeing Fiennes put into the role as long as they do the transition smoothly.
