Is 'Godzilla' Going After Aaron Johnson?

Warner Brothers/Legendary Picture's 'Godzilla' reboot has been in the news a lot lately. First they hired Drew Pearce ('Iron Man 3') to do a rewrite, and then they ran into a potential legal rough patch involving producers Roy Lee and Dan Lin. It was about this time that they also hired Frank Darabont ('The Walking Dead') to do another rewrite. Then there were whispers that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was going to be playing the lead. Because at this point, if it's a major studio project in development, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be "in the mix" for the lead. Now it seems the casting focus has shifted to a more 'Kick-Ass' choice for the male lead. Aaron Johnson, or Aaron Taylor-Johnson as he is now dubbed, is purportedly being eyed for the principle human role in Gareth Edwards' highly-anticipated monster movie. Sources are saying that Johnson is actually the frontrunner for the part, and his signing of the deal is only contingent upon his reading Darabont's draft.

As you have no doubt gathered by this point, there is no shortage of casting news floating around the blogosphere. More often than not, these reports end up being denied or debunked, but the discussion they yield is often interesting regardless of whether they end up being verified. So let us discuss. First and foremost, I think Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a terrific young actor. I was impressed with him in 'Kick-Ass' and even his turn in the lackluster 'Savages' was quite strong. Would he make a suitable lead for 'Godzilla?' That's really hard to say without having any inkling as to how the new version of the script will be structured. However, it would greatly behoove 'Godzilla' to make a priority of casting strong, proven talent to complement their titular lizard. Failure to do so places the new 'Godzilla' in danger of falling into the same trap as, say, 'Transformers.' Yes, it's great that they had giant robots smashing into each other, and that was admittedly amazing to watch, but every once of human element in each of the 'Transformers' movies is aggravatingly terrible. Whether they land Gordon-Levitt or Taylor-Johnson, they at least appear to be on the right track in regard to level of talent needed. I just hope the script for 'Godzilla' develops the human side of the story as much as the city-stomping monster aspects.

What do you guys think? Do you feel Aaron Taylor-Johson make a suitable lead? How important to you is the human element of the new Godzilla movie?

Please please PLEASE don't make the mistake of thinking that the audience wants to go in and see a generic soldier with a generic plot in the forefront of a FUCKING GODZILLA FILM.

I think you guys are overlooking something major that will keep this film from not being like Transformers and that's Gareth Edwards. He made a monster movie that ONLY had human elements and it was fantastic.  With him directing and Darabont rewriting, I'm excited for this film. Also Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a good actor and working with Edwards might boost his talents more.

heres how to make a good Godzilla movie: less human scenes, more monster scenes, have godzilla fight another monster, no singing aliens, no bug people aliens, no alien human hybrids, NO ALIENS, and blow shit up. oh, and Godzilla is a guy in a rubber suit

I don't think the casting is important at all in this movie. Let's be honest, what difference would it make if they cast Johnson or Gordon-Levitt. They're probably gonna end up playing the same clichéd character. The real star of the movie is going to be the monster itself. And I'm afraid the script is going to be clichéd as well. There are only so many directions you can go in a Godzilla movie.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt should be in all the movies.

I like Aaron Johnson and am hoping that he replaces Shia Labeouf. No in anything in particular just in general. Kind of like how Emma Stone replaced Lindsy Lohan.

Honestly I don't give two fucks about another American knock off of a Japanese Franchise.

I hope he plays a reporter, not a scientist who doesn't act like a scientist.
