Star Pulse is reporting that 15 year old sensation
Dakota Fanning (
Charlotte's Web,
War of the Worlds) is in talks to star in a sequel to
The Wizard of Oz. Producer Basil Iwanyk says, "It will be set in the present day and feature Dorothy's granddaughter."
The 1939 original - based on the 1900 children's book 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' - was nominated for six Academy Awards, won two (for Best Original Song and Score) and has become one of the most beloved films in the history of cinema.
The Tinseltown classic has since been adapted by Sidney Lumet in his lackluster 1978 film
The Wiz (which starred Michael Jackson and Diana Ross) and as a sequel in 1985's
Return to Oz.
Though details are scarce, Co-producer Todd McFarlane adds, "You've still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she's much closer to the Ripley character from Alien than a helpless singing girl."
Interesting? Strange? Sacrilege? What do you think?
UPDATE:
Empire caught up with McFarlane, who debunked the Dakota Fanning casting rumors:
I haven't heard that. If we just do a sugary sweet Dorothy that everybody has seen over and over for 50 years, as far as I'm concerned, that's too obvious. I'm happy to go with whoever will get the most people in the seats, but sometimes that can change from month to month.
