Wow, big day for villains. Fresh on the heels of the announcement that Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to play a, if not the, villain in Alan Taylor's 'Thor 2,' Marvel has further announced that Ashley Hamilton ('Sunset Beach') is in talks to appear as Firepower in 'Iron Man 3.' For awhile now we've known that Sir Ben Kingsley would be playing the big villain, and may or may not be Mandarin, but Firepower will purportedly also be giving Tony Stark headaches in Shane Black's upcoming film. Firepower, as I've only just found out, is a test pilot who worked on an armored suit project for a Stark rival and ended up butting metallic heads with the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. Hamilton is the son of actor George Hamilton and the stepson of musician Rod Stewart.
Wow, is it just me or is this thoroughly underwhelming news? I don't profess to know a lot about Iron Man, but Firepower is not what I would call a top tier villain. So it would seem the best way to make this a big deal for the movie would be to cast a fantastic and/or well-known actor in the part and elevate it to something special. Instead, they cast a guy I'd venture to say no one has heard of. With Kingsley on board, I'd hazard Firepower won't get a lot of screen time, but it still seems like an ill-advised addition. As has been said again and again, the plot of 'Iron Man 3' will be based on Warren Ellis' 'Extremis' storyline, which makes this piece of news even more confusing. Firepower is a character connected not with 'Extremis,' but with 'Armor Wars.' Seriously, what is going on with the additional characters in this? First Savin and now Firepower? It's like a who's who of...who cares. They need to tread lightly, one more villain and they're in danger of crossing into 'Spider-Man 3' territory.
What do you guys think? Any die hard Firepower fans out there? Do you see a troubling pattern developing here?

Comment by Dr. Detfink on May 25, 2012 at 1:46pm Shane Black is NOT writing the movie...He's only directing it. Unless that's changed.
Comment by Afro Heisenberg on May 25, 2012 at 1:30pm I’d hazard a guess that both Savin and Fireman will be henchman rather than additional top tier villains, so I’ve got no problem.
We know the story will be based on extemis, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a straight shot-for-shot adaptation (Dark Knight was ‘based’ on Long Halloween, but was almost a completely different story).
Basically, I agree with everything fungusmonkey said. Avengers was amazing, Marvel usually get these things right, and Shane Black is writing the damn thing. Let’s not go crazy.
Comment by Todd A. on May 25, 2012 at 1:16pm Most likely Kingsley character (most likely the Mandarin) is there as the main scheming villains to match wits with Stark while the two smaller villains are more of the muscle and physical threat to him.
Comment by Composite Who Horrible on May 25, 2012 at 12:52pm Why do I have a feeling that Kingsley is going to be in the post credit stinger only...

Oh, and the Chinese money-launderer. I forgot about him too.

They didn't say it was going to be based on 'Extremis', they're just using that as inspiration (along with a lot of other classic storylines). Just like with IM1 and IM2, 3 will most likely be a blend of a couple different Iron Man story arcs, and it looks like they're going to continue the Armor Wars thread that was still left hanging from the last film.
I think that it's completely ridiculous to freak out about the film so early in advance. Most likely they'll have one "Big Bad" who is organizing and upgrading several smaller villains with stolen Stark tech, all to keep Stark off balance and unaware of a larger plot (which is probably where the Extremis storyline comes into play).
Also, Spider-Man 3 wasn't bad because of the number of villains in it. It was bad because the whole thing was poorly written. Let's not forget that Dark Knight had Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, two main mobsters, a fleet of random henchmen, and a corporate weasel as antagonists in it and that turned out pretty okay. It's not about a number, it's about who's writing it - and with Black scripting it, I think we'll be ok.
Comment by Dilster3000 on May 25, 2012 at 12:19pm Too many people in the cast, I'm worried.
Comment by Bagheadman on May 25, 2012 at 12:09pm Well if Kingsley is playing the Mandarin, he needs henchmen. And since comic book movies really haven't had that much in the way of fleshed out and named henchmen - besides maybe Bullseye - I think it's a pretty interesting development. Not every villain needs their origin told.
