'Iron Man 3' Adds Firepower To Its Cast

Wow, big day for villains. Fresh on the heels of the announcement that Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to play a, if not the, villain in Alan Taylor's 'Thor 2,' Marvel has further announced that Ashley Hamilton ('Sunset Beach') is in talks to appear as Firepower in 'Iron Man 3.' For awhile now we've known that Sir Ben Kingsley would be playing the big villain, and may or may not be Mandarin, but Firepower will purportedly also be giving Tony Stark headaches in Shane Black's upcoming film. Firepower, as I've only just found out, is a test pilot who worked on an armored suit project for a Stark rival and ended up butting metallic heads with the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. Hamilton is the son of actor George Hamilton and the stepson of musician Rod Stewart.

Wow, is it just me or is this thoroughly underwhelming news? I don't profess to know a lot about Iron Man, but Firepower is not what I would call a top tier villain. So it would seem the best way to make this a big deal for the movie would be to cast a fantastic and/or well-known actor in the part and elevate it to something special. Instead, they cast a guy I'd venture to say no one has heard of. With Kingsley on board, I'd hazard Firepower won't get a lot of screen time, but it still seems like an ill-advised addition. As has been said again and again, the plot of 'Iron Man 3' will be based on Warren Ellis' 'Extremis' storyline, which makes this piece of news even more confusing. Firepower is a character connected not with 'Extremis,' but with 'Armor Wars.' Seriously, what is going on with the additional characters in this? First Savin and now Firepower? It's like a who's who of...who cares. They need to tread lightly, one more villain and they're in danger of crossing into 'Spider-Man 3' territory.

What do you guys think? Any die hard Firepower fans out there? Do you see a troubling pattern developing here?

I just watched Scott Pilgrim vs. The World again today and I think a movie can have more than one villain. Spiderman 3 just did not present them the right way. Plus I'm expecting to see more War Machine so we may see two-on-two fights. I'd like that.

Firepower will probably be a fodder villain in the beginning of the movie or something

Why does everyone and their grandma start to get Iron Man type suits? That's what....6 guys from all 3 of the films to develop these things. It kinda loses the novelty of Iron Mans "powers" if everyone else can make one too. I'm not going to write it off before I see it but I would like for them to stop with the Iron Man villains with power suits or its going to look less like Iron Man and more like a Gundam spin off.....

Oddly, Tony is also a murderer...

If I have it right, Firepower was an attempt to outgun Iron Man...one that worked. Unfortunately it feels like a re-make of Iron Monger film-wise. Tony DOES have a lot of excellent villains, not all of them of the super variety. The problem I see here is that Disney/Marvel seems completely unwilling to go the non-tech route. They even explained Thor's MAGIC hammer as some form of technology...so as not to piss off the religious right? And thus, we are stuck will only the tech and corporate villains for Iron Man.

Which sucks, because I would love to see them sneak in Fin Fang Foom....

Seeing how Tony can survive a lot of things...wouldn't a mini nuke be a considerable threat and force him to upgrade his armor?

That's my Iron Man is my favorite hero. He was largely inspired by Howard Hughes and one of the scientists responsible for the Manhattan Project. He's also a murderer. I like this idea of Man's plight to make amends even though it'll never be enough.

Right on, Fungus.

Good to read that Black is also writing. I just thought about Damon Lindelof who talked about how relieved he was that he only had to share the writing on Prometheus while Cowboys and Aliens went through NINE writers....

And that's my biggest fear...that too many cooks will spoil the broth.

Don't see,why people are complaining so much,We haven't even got a trailer or know what the story is about.Just because the film has a few more villains and aren't as well know as some of his other villains. This is kinda of a good sign, they aren't just throwing in popular villains like what they did in Spider-Man 3.Let's just try to reserve judgement until we see a Trailer or know what the story is about.
