Last week, it was reported that James Wan ('Saw,' 'Death Sentence') was taking on New Line's upcoming 'MacGyver' movie; a strange property for adaptation, an even stranger choice for director. The word on the street was that the studio put Wan in the director's chair for 'MacGyver' because his new film 'The Conjuring' is testing through the roof. Well it seems that between the release of 'The Conjuring,' and this 'MacGyver' film, Wan will revisit one of his most accomplished films. 'Insidious Chapter 2' has been set for an August 30th, 2013 release. The movie will reteam Wan with the entire cast of 'Insidious' as well as writer Leigh Whannell. The movie will begin shooting January 15th in L.A.
This news is a mixed bag. On the one hand, I was a big fan of 'Insidious.' It was one of those haunted house movies that added clever twists to an old horror trope. It also featured some lingering, haunting images that bucked the tendency of contemporary horror to only use jump scares. I'm excited to see James Wan getting so much work in the wake of 'Insidious,' and especially happy to see that he is continuing to work in horror; 'MacGyver' notwithstanding. That being said, the idea of another 'Insidious' kind of concerns me. The fact that they're bringing back the whole cast is a bit troubling considering how the first one ended. I will say nothing more for fear of spoiling major plot points. I would rather see him continue to take on new, original horror projects than get shackled into doing sequels. I'm anxious to see 'The Conjuring' based on the positive buzz so far, but I don't know if that will make me feel better about this sequel or simply reaffirm that original projects are better suited for Wan.
What do you guys think? Excited for 'Insidious 2?' Any thoughts on where it might go?

Insidious was really good. With all the same people back on board I have faith that they will do a good job with part deux. Furthermore, I disagree that this can be compared to doing a sequel of paranormal activity, of which all those movies sucked.

Insidious was good but really lost steam in the third act. Then it just got silly.

Comment by Chad Posey on November 21, 2012 at 5:44am Yeah but, Leigh Whannell is writing this and he concluded the Saw TRILOGY very well, he stepped away after that and other writers fucked it up. It won't be Insidious redux or anything, I have faith he'll pull the story together nicely.

@Tommy - the statement that any "true horror fan" would share your opinion by definition also denotes that you consider yourself a "true horror fan". And, just as someone might say "if you are a true Batman fan, you're gonna love The Dark Knight", it conversely means that if you don't like the Dark Knight you're somehow not a "true Batman fan". And in regards to my choice of words, yes - the belief that you are somehow better than someone else? Or that your personal opinion is obviously the opinion of the majority? Textbook narcissism. Or at the very least vanity.
If you want to state the overgeneralized opinion that you can't be a "true horror fan" (not that there really *is* such a thing, only an elitist form of thinking that somehow ranks a person's fandom upon your own unique and personal set of criteria) if you aren't excited by this news, that's fine and entirely your own opinion. You'd be empirically proven wrong by all the horror fans out there that aren't excited for this film, but hey - what the heck. Go for it. Best of luck with that.

The comment section is no place to be rude or call someone names because they disagree with an obvious logical fallacy. And there wasn't any "malice" until you called another Spillio a "pompous twit" just for pointing that out.
Comment by John Thomas on November 21, 2012 at 2:09am I liked Insidious but it seems like a sequel isn't necessary, still will likely go see it in the theatre if it gets good reviews.
