Illumination to Revamp 'Cat in the Hat'
With his 3D animated version of the Dr. Seuss classic 'The Lorax' doing incredibly well across the nation (over $135 million domestic to date, as well as numerous lucrative promotional deals), producer Chris Meledandri is once again teaming up with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment to focus on another Seuss tale (or tail, if you're that type of person): 'The Cat in the Hat'.
'Wait', you may be saying to yourself, 'didn't they already do a live-action version of that with Mike Myers that melted the eyeballs of small children, caused further suffering in the Middle East, and brought about the rebirth of the Antichrist'? Why yes, random and oddly hyperbolic reader, yes they did. That's precisely why I think this is a brilliant move on their part - with the last version being so spectacularly bashed by audiences and critics, I doubt there's hardly a soul out there who would argue that a reboot of the property (especially a fun 3D animated one) is unwarranted (of course, I'm sure certain Spillios will prove me wrong). Plus, making animated Seuss films seems to be a financially rewarding venture (Fox's 'Horton Hears a Who' made almost $300mil worldwide, for example) and an opportunity to sell a character's likeness to a variety of companies and products to defray most of the production costs.
The reboot is being led by screenwriter Rob Lieber, who is also penning an adaptation of the children's book 'Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day' for 20th Century Fox. Next up for Illumination and Meledandri is the sequel 'Despicable Me 2' starring Steve Carrell and Al Pacino. You can also see our trailer talk for 'The Lorax' by CLICKING HERE.

No matter how much certain people dislike what Hollywood re-hashes and re-releases, they are making loads of money. All we can hope for is that it's entertaining, I can't say I even care much anymore. I'm not surprised that they're making the cat in the hat after how well The Lorax did.

Not proud of it but I love the 2003 version. Every once in awhile I watch it with my cousins who also love it. It's a guilty pleasure for us.

I can see a finale using Seussical's plot. But to keep farming Geisel we really should not. I bet that the Cat will be a big, flawed bafoon. And I bet that the Things will be minions, BOOHOON!!!

There's actually been 6 total Dr. Seuss-penned books that starred the Cat In The Hat, as well as 2 animated TV specials, a currently-running PBS series, the abysmally awful live-action film, and a Broadway musical called "Seussical," so there's quite a bit of material that can be drawn from, not just that first book from the series.
Also, how the in the fucking hell can there be a feature length film made out of a book as short as "Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day?" Jesus, Hollywood, you're really fucking reaching, and you need to STOP IT NOW.
