Idris Elba Takes 'The Long Walk To Freedom' As Nelson Mandela

Idris Elba's dance card is currently filled with huge studio films. 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' just hit theaters,  Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' will be released later this year, and next year we will see him in Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim.' With a slate of projects like that, what else could he possibly squeeze in before the end of the year. Well, how about a biopic based on the life of South African President Nelson Mandela? According to the actor himself in a recent interview, that's exactly what's he doing. Elba will apparently soon begin shooting 'The Long Walk to Freedom,' a biopic based on Mandela's autobiography. Beyond that, details are a bit sketchy; for example we're still not sure who's directing this film or whether it'll be theatrically released.

Idris Elba is a phenomenal actor, probably one of my favorite working today, and I can't wait to see him take on the role of a living historical icon like Nelson Mandela whose story is microcosmic of an entire nation's struggle for equality and the human struggle against oppression. To be honest, Elba is so good that the film could be a filmed one-man stage show, a la Laurence Fishburne in HBO's 'Thurgood,' and I would still leap at the chance to see it. I'm glad to see Elba is following up his Golden Globe win for his work on the BBC series 'Luther,' which is an incredible show you should all watch by the way, with something poignant and personal to break up the blockbuster streak. We've included the clip from Elba's interview, in which he spilled the beans about this project, below so feel free to take a look.

What do you guys think? Do you like the idea of Elba as Mandela? Any 'Luther' fans out there?

THIS is what they should have got Morgan Freeman for, not Invictus. I don't know. Idris Elba's a good actor but I agree with Tonyia. He doesn't even look slightly similar to Mandela.
