If you didn't watch the Golden Globes the other night, you may not be aware that Idris Elba won a statue for his role on the BBC series 'Luther.' Where you've probably seen him of late, if 'Luther' is not on your radar, is in the role of Heimdall in last year's big screen adaptation of 'Thor.' Heimdall was the the guardian of Asgard vigilantly stationed on the Rainbow Bridge. While on the red carpet after the Globes, riding a high from his win, Elba confirmed in an interview with MTV that he would be returning to the franchise; reprising the role of Heimdall in 'Thor 2.' He mentioned that he wasn't sure yet about 'The Avengers,' though that seemed to be his polite way of stating he would not be in the film, but he did assert that he would be returning for the 'Thor' sequel; lending a special shout out to recently hired director Alan Taylor ('Game of Thrones').

I won't pretend to be well-versed in the realm of Thor, but Idris Elba is a phenomenal actor and his return is great news for the sequel. My hope is that he won't merely be coming back, but in fact be getting a bigger role with more to do in the second installment. I thought he did a great job in 'Thor,' but they didn't give him much to do...in fact he spent a goodly amount of the film literally frozen. Elba did make a brief mention of Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim,' a cast in which he also finds himself, but it was mostly to comment on what we all already suspected: that the film would be of mammoth scale. As much as I like the guy, I'm glad that they apparently aren't going to try and shoehorn Heimdall into 'The Avengers,' I can't imagine how we would fit in.

What do you guys think? Are you happy Elba is returning?

'Thor 2' hits theaters November 15th, 2013; 'Pacific Rim' lands July 13, 2013

I saw Heimdall for like 18 seconds and Thor, and oh what a glorious 18 seconds it was. Looking forward to more Heimdall in Thor 2. But yeah writing him into Avengers without having much in Thor1 wouldnt have been great.

Love the UK because they give their black or better term black British actors and actress their fair share. This is why we have Idris Elba a great actor.
