I Saw a Film at a Special Screening That Will BLOW EVERYONE AWAY.
*QUICK UPDATE: there's been some confusion about this blog since it was
featured. I wrote this about six months ago, and
since then some of the information is dated. Sorry for any
confusion.*

So I went to see Shutter Island with a friend last week, and we got a sheet saying we're invited to attend a premiere for a new film not being released yet. We show up for the film yesterday (thinking we would be seeing Kick-Ass), and to our surprise, we were shown...
Yes, that's right I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and I love the fuck out of this movie. Like the snowjob Carlyle received from Paramount for Star Trek, we honestly thought Kick-Ass was being screened for the general public. It was being billed as a "music driven slacker action-comedy based on a comic book series", and I thought that this movie was still in the process of editing, but man was I surprised.
After the screening, not only did I fill out the typical screening sheet, but me and my friend were also involved in the focus group Q&A session in order to get a general consensus of who would like the film and why. I have now cemented my name into this film's history. And I'm damn proud of it.
I would like to review it, but... okay. I will.

So does it follow the comic?
My praise goes out to Edgar Wright, because not only did he beautifully translate this zany world to the screen so brilliantly, he knew how to make everyone love it. And when it comes to following the comic like any good adaptation should, it follows it so well that when I picked up the book yesterday, every change they made for pacing also made sense.
But what about the general public who haven't even heard of this?
You like video games? Well then you'll love it. They have video game references out the wazoo, but you don't have to be a hardcore gamer to get the jokes.
Indie music? I hate that genre and I somehow loved the music. The music appealed to me in the vein of Guitar Hero, where they feature bands that people may not like or unknown artists and their sound is just so appealing that everyone will love it. So people who are fans of the genre? Yeah, they'll love it too.
People who like Michael Cera? They will love it. People like me who thought he is annoying? They'll see his usual shtick as a perfect fit for the character, and he can also fight which surprised the hell outta me.
And speaking of acting, every actor in this is great and no one performs
awfully. You might not like a certain character, but you won't think
they couldn't act or did things that weren't fitting for the role. *The other cast members? They are just as good as Cera. Chris Evans and Brandon Routh were my favorite exes, simply because they understood the character. And I discovered a new hottie thanks to this film...
The action, cinematography, romance, and it's offbeat humor will give everyone something they want out of a film like this, and that is why I give this film a very high...
*But why not a Better than Sex you ask? Simple, I didn't like the ending. But since they shot some stuff from Vol. 6, I hope that one point in the ending will be changed.*

I can't wait for this film. And I'm glad Bryan is releasing the last book after the movie, that way the film ending won't bother me that much, when I have the real ending in my hand. In the words of BumbleBee..."I'M SO EXCITED AND I JUST CAN'T HIDE" I can't wait to see this film cuz I think I'll like it. XD

I think it was Edgar Wright or Bryan Lee O'Malley that mentioned at one point many months ago that the movie would have a different ending (at least somewhat) from the novel, seeing as O'Malley was still in the midst of writing volume 6 during the film's production. So whatever qualms you may have with how the movie ends, the book will likely give you one that you'll find more satisfactory. Me? I wouldn't know, since I haven't already seen the movie like you GOD WHY WON'T TIME MOVE FASTER??!!!????!!!!!!!!
I honestly couldn't be more excited for this if I tried... but I probably will be by the time I'm actually in the theater opening day waiting to see it. Seriously, I literally marked August 13 on my calendar, and I couldn't care about anything else coming out that weekend- The Expendables can go f*** itself in its orgy of B-list action stars trying to desperately salvage their careers compared to Scott mother f'ing Pilgrim!

Ok, I might not like Rumba, but his trolling comment is actually sheding some light in what I think will be the performance of this movie.
I believe it will have the same fate as Kick-Ass (as far as critical aclaim, public aclaim, but more importantly financial succes), in that even being a good and fun movie it fail to resonate to a larger audience and will basically go "under the radar" for most.
Will it be adored by those who loved it? Yes. Will it be the next-big-thing? Highly doubtful
