Dr.Horrible posted a statusIt was around July of 2007 when I first discovered the Youtube user known as thatguywiththeglasses aka Doug Walker. At that point in my life I was fascinated with a thirty minuet long PSA from the early 90s that had not so fond memories of called Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue. While watching it again for shits and giggles I discovered that the suggestions column contained a link to a review of the program. I clicked on the link and, I was introduced the Nostalgia Critic and what I thought was one of the funniest videos on Youtube. A few days later, another review was posted. This time, it was of the Power Rangers movie. By this point I decided to subscribe to the channel, and checked out it's sister channels that contained the TGWTG skits, and the 5 Second Movies. I stuck with Walker until he eventually got fed up with the constant abuse of copyright laws being committed by various media moguls, and left YouTube to start his own website. I watched the site grow, and gain it's regular members from the Spoony One, to Linkara, to Benzaie etc. And even though I disagreed with them on certain films, or games that were reviewed I stuck with the site and it's rapidly growing crew. However, at some point this year, I started loosing interest in the site. I wasn't watching the videos as frequently, and some of their new material wasn't catching my interest.
At first I felt that the cause of my weighing interest was the feeling that the videos didn't have enough substance in them. Unlike say the work RedLetterMedia or Sfdebris in which the reviewers dig deep into what makes a piece entertainment succeed or fail, the TGWTG crew seemed content with merely nitpicking, and shouting at the material. I was content with that explanation for a while, and then I found this piece by one of it's former contributors, the Distressed Watcher:
I know it isn't exactly a scathing tell all confession, but this video shows (for me at least) that the website might be in a steady state of decline. The reviews don't feel as funny as they used to be, many of the new contributors just don't seem work for me and at times it feels that they(Doug Walker mainly) are struggling for new material.
This is not to say that I'm going to start burning bridges here. I may return if the site gets its act together or if Spoony ever finishes his last review of the Ultimate Warrior comics, but for now I'm done with it, and I want to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Comment by Jason Straub on October 7, 2011 at 2:22am I think it's been two years since I stopped going to that site, but I was just starting to get tired of the content. I was starting to get bored with the Nostalgia Critic just picking a bunch of movies that were made in a few months just to cash in on a trend that was popular with kids at the time, and never really had any artistic merit, then acting outraged that they weren't marvelous works of art that paid proper homage to our childhood memories. It's low hanging fruit and since most of the reviews weren't all that deep or thought out, I just got tired of it. For a while I moved towards Spoony's stuff, and it was better, but when I discovered Spill and the Red Letter Media reviews I pretty much gave up on that whole website in general and I've never had any regrets about it. Both of the sites that I started going to were much more intelligent, and I've actually learned a lot about the entertainment industry through Spill while still being entertained.
So who knows, maybe the site is in a decline, or maybe your tastes are just maturing and you're looking for something with a little more depth.
Comment by Pretty in Plague on September 30, 2011 at 4:24pm I think I see what everyone means by him starting to slowly suck. It really is him choosing movies that aren't quite THAT terrible or just running out of material to write.
One thing I will say that has bothered me since she was first picked: I hate the Nostalgia Chick. I mean it's cool if you're a feminist, but if your job is supposed to be reviewing movies, don't go on a rant about sexism and rarely ever even reviewing girl-related movies that are even that nostalgic. She's really unfunny and boring and comes off as whiney.
I hate MarzGurl too for the record, but mostly because she did a video about Animation and bashed all good American animation just so she could state how her weaboo love of anime was so much better 'animation' when she doesn't know shit about animation and how it works.
And yes, Spill.com has Hollywood.com running things. TGWTG is self-run and runs on donations, which is a problem.

Comment by The Dubya on September 28, 2011 at 10:41pm To me, it sort of just feels like a lot of the contributors are just getting burnt the hell out.
Here at Spill, Korey at least has a crew of people to help him out with coming up with material and getting stuff done (i.e. the audio/video reviews, podcasts, live events like at Fantastic Fest and Comic Con and SpillCon, etc.) With TGWTG, I don't know that they have that kind of help with their content. For the most part it's all them and maybe like a few helpful friends. And they do it on SUCH a consistent weekly basis and consistently have SUCH a picky-ass fanbase that's pretty much terrified of anything resembling change (i.e. Doug's Lets Play video) that at some point the fun of what they were doing disappeared and now it's just become a job.
Perfect example: Phelous. Before I thought he was one of the funniest guys on the site, but now he's just grabbing ANY freakin straight-to-DVD horror schlock and stretching with his "Oh I'm nonchalant about being meta toward my fans because they constantly point that shit out to annoy me" routine that's a pretty big giveaway that he's not enjoying doing this nearly as much as he used to.
There's still a handful of contributors I do still like such as CR, ToddintheShadows, PawDugan, NChick (yes, I still like her videos. Bite me), OanCitizen, heck even FilmBrain's starting to rise from the dead, because they don't feel like they HAVE to please their audience by pandering to them, which is probably the biggest hindrance to the site and explains why things seem to be going downhill for them. All the forced-memes and catchphrases and crossovers and cameos and resistant-to-change-fanbase is really hurting them in the long run.
