If it's crap... We'll tell you

Kara

I apparently just finished reading the bible

I had no idea Alan Moore was Jesus though. I dont think I need to go into any detail on this here.

Starting off, maybe something has been lost over time since the book came out and now. I will not say it is trully epic and absolutely flawless as some people in general have. It was a very good book. I must say even though I knew what some of what happened in the end I still had no clue what was really awaiting me when I got there.

The one bit I really really did not like was the stuff dealing with the pirate story that was being read off and on throughout the book. I think I understand it in the end but at the same time I may be wrong. It was in a round about way describing what happened with Veidt, and how his isolation from the world drove him mad?

My favorite chapter had to be when Laurie went to mars with Jon to try and convince him to come back and help. I cant really tell you why but for me it was just a great chapter to read. Maybe it had to do with the fact that she knew going on it was pointless to try and convince him but somehow she still managed to do it. It kind of reminds me of that Futurama episode where Bender meets god. Bender asks him if he knows what he will do before he does it, and god says yes. Bender then asks what if he does something else, and god says then I dont know.

I liked and at the same time was confused about the graffiti. I liked how it ended up being the moment with Dan and Laurie, but at the same time I wonder how some street artists were able to do it. I mean I am sure it ended up being coincidence but still.

I think I hurt myself a bit by only reading 1 chapter a day though. Because when I started getting near the end and I was reading more at a time I was really getting into it and couldnt wait to see what would happen next.

I think after a first reading I would give it a strong 8 out of 10. Now I have to find a new book to read.

Yes, I found it interesting that Jon died for are sins and was reserrcted on the third as Dr. Manhattan.

I will hand it to you that the book has lost a little relevance since it's release. Although it does kind of mimic the panic of the 9/11 attacks, it's very much a relic from the Cold War. It's still fun to read though as a reminder of the fear the Cold War brought in its day.

I love the graphic novel a lot, but I can see your criticisms since I had several of my own. I especially agree with the pirate story. It wasn't bad, but it felt like it should have been a separate thing since it didn't add much to the actual story. It felt like a distraction. I respect the attention to detail Moore gave to the universe, but I think it's good that it will be a separate mini-movie for the Watchmen DVD (and it will be narrated by Gerard Butler, which is pretty cool).

I was more annoyed, however, by the whole thing with the lesbian couple at the newsstand. I'm not annoyed by the fact it's in there, but that it served no purpose in the story other than to shamelessly promote pro-homosexual politics. It felt like it was really shoehorned into the story for no reason. Thankfully it's not nearly as bad as the V For Vendetta propaganda.

I think my favorite part was when Dr. Manhattan went to Mars and looked back into his past in a broken chronology. I thought it was a really creative storytelling device and helped explain how omniscient and grand his mind works in this new life he's living. I did like that chapter you mentioned though since it was probably the strongest emotional point for Laurie in the book. I like your comparison to Futurama though, since it actually makes sense.

I'd say it was a 9 out of 10, since I liked a lot about it and then really disliked a lot of nit-picky details too.

Watchmen is a meal of a graphic novel to read. I think re-reading it over the years I still pick up new details.

I think Laurie is the emotional center of that story. She's caught in a situation where she doesn't feel she can love Dr. Manhattan because he's on a higher level of logic. Even though she kicks ass, she has the basic needs any woman wants from a man.
