Ah, strike one from the phenomenal cast of the 'Robocop' remake. For a while now, the reports out of Jose Padilha's remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 classic cyborg police officer opus have been focused on the impressive roster of actors it had attracted. Among this all-star lineup were names like Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, and Hugh Laurie. Well, it now appears that Dr. House has surgically removed himself from the equation. Laurie was to play the head of the infamous Omi Corp, but has decided to leave the project. The studio is scrambling to find a replacement and rumor has it they might be talking to Clive Owen. No word yet on when an official deal may surface there.

Dammit! I can't tell you how much I was looking forward to seeing Hugh Laurie step into the Dick Jones-type role. He has such a natural contempt and can project a snide lack of amiability when called upon. He would have made a terrific villain for this film. It's strange that a movie this close to the beginning of shooting would not have finalized the contracts of its principle players, but perhaps it was in the attempt to do so that something went awry here. Obviously, there is still a lot of talent in this cast, but as we movie fans know well, the villain is one of the most important aspects of any story. Frankly, I'm hoping the Clive Owen rumor is precisely that, a rumor. I don't seem him as a viable option for this role. It's too bad they already have Gary Oldman locked in to that scientist role, as he has demonstrated time and time again a knack for cinematic villainy.

What do you guys think? Disappointed Laurie is out? Who would you choose as his replacement?

Maybe it's because noboy want's a remake of this movie. Though I do hope it does well there's just no point of the remake. They could wait a while or at least I can.

They shouldn't be making a fucking remake anyway.  Didn't these fuckers get a clue when the Total Recall remake tanked?  Fuck you Hollywood.

Replace him with Werner Herzog. Only Herzog's acting chops can save this movie.

@Micheal and Allan Jensen

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had that reaction. I just went back and watched the original. He would have been perfect.

Oh well I'm still having good hopes that this remake will be at the very least competent. Clive Owen...I've never seen him as a villain and I can't really see him as a guy that could pull off the way Ronny Cox acted. On the other hand I wouldn't mind seeing him as long as he just went his own route with it. I do miss the idea of Hugh Laurie being an absolute dick and killing people instead of helping them.
