How Will Mary Jane Factor In To 'Amazing Spider-Man 2?'

Last week, it was reported that Shailene Woodley was in talks to play Mary Jane Watson in Marc Webb's sequel to 'The Amazing Spider-Man.' Now it looks like that deal is finalized and she's already looking to book another gig Neil Burger's adaptation of Veronica Roth's young adult novel 'The Divergent.' Apparently there was a concern that Woodley would not be able to juggle 'The Divergent' and 'Amazing Spider-Man 2.' But according to one source, MJ's role in the upcoming sequel may actually be quite minor. Evidently she will have a very small part in 'Amazing Spider-Man 2,' but that part will evolve into a lead in 'Amazing Spider-Man 3.' The second film is also said to set in motion the "Death of Gwen Stacy" storyline.

I suppose this is the kind of thing I should have seen coming form a mile away...if I read more comics. When I heard Mary Jane would be turning up in the sequel, I was actually a little concerned as to how the two love interests would be balanced. Let's face it, in this franchise as well as with so many other films, the love triangle conceit is spectacularly played out. However if Mary Jane's role is going to be so minor, that would logically preclude a lovers' tiff being a focal point of the film, right? Please? Anywho, I'm glad it's been confirmed that Woodley will be Mary Jane. As I mentioned last week, I think she's quite talented, I really enjoyed her work in 'The Descendants,' and will bring a great deal to the role. I vaguely remember from the few Spidey issues I've read that Gwen Stacy dies, but I'm interested as to how Webb will handle that changing of the guard in the female lead position. If they are building to that story, and we know that MJ will be the lead in part 3, is it safe to assume Emma Stoneisn't making it out of 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' alive?

What do you guys think? Surprised Mary Jane's role in the sequel will be smaller? Which Parker beauty do you prefer?

The first film really dissuaded me from being able to like Peter Parker's character. That said, I did enjoy most of the film much more than the spill crew did. Overall, I'm hoping for Gwen's death (C'mon who wasn't during the first film?) What villains would you guys like to see in the second film? I would like to see the Rhino or maybe one of the classic villains like Electro or maybe the Enforcers. I also would not mind seeing someone like the Black Cat making an appearance.

I don't have a problem with the darker tone as long as Spidey remains somewhat light hearted. Peter's life is and always will be shitty, even in House of M when he had everything he wanted something still fucked it up. While I enjoyed the first film I'll admit it had some problems that hopefully a sequel will fix. I'm hoping they make the Green Goblin a minor character in it as apposed to the main villain and have the end of the film be a shot of Gwen Stacy's apartment in disarray and lone pumpkin bomb sitting there ala the comic book.

My major problem with Amazing Spider-Man (the movie, not the comic) is the pall of darkness that reigned over the movie. I for one am getting sick and tired of Hollywood buzz overusing the words "darker tone" when describing the latest movie rehash of any overexposed franchise. The movie had the deaths of both Ben Parker and Captain George Stacy in it, each serving as a bookend for the story. Sure, Spider-man has gone through some dark times. A lot of major characters in the series have died: Captain Stacy, Jean DeWolf, Gwen Stacy, Ned Leeds, Kraven the Hunter, and Harry Osborne all come to mind. But what moviemakers fail to realize is that readers had years, decades in some cases, to know about these characters before their demise. Death is most impactful on those who knew the deceased and somber stories are only dark when their is lightness to give them contrast.

This latest news does not give me hope for the newest Spider-Man movie franchise. I didn't care for The Amazing Spider-Man and it looks like the sequel is going to prolong my dissapointment.

i wonder is green goblin is gonna be the villian. that'd be interesting bc since there trying to cast harry osborn. that would be interesting if they go the spectacular spider-man route and make harry the green goblin first

well it may not be the last dance of Mary Jane. But will it be enough to kill Parker's pain? :P

Is it just me or does Shailene Woodley look just like a girl version of Andrew Garfield?

Seee?!! That being said Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Mary Jane!
