If it's crap... We'll tell you

When you see this poster your first thoughts are probably: Shit, Uwe Boll, ruined my dreams.

Unfortunately that is the case with most video game films. Uwe Boll, although a terrible director seemed like he atleast tried, Think of him as that retarded kid in school who knew what he wanted to do and how to do it but, he was just terrible in the execution, atleast as his teachers and mother would remind him, he tried. Most video game adaptions seem like effortless, soul less, money grabbing, aspiration ruining shitbag films. Why do Film makers continue to do make video game adaptions like this? Simple as most of you would have sarcastically rolled your eyes and posted in the comments had I not mentioned it: Money. Just like the case of any other adaption of any other media, the main goal of these people is to get as much money from the fans as possible. Nowadays though..I think fans have finally given up. You can't even look at a comments section of new VGame adaption announcement without seeing negative responses from fans. How can film makers fix this problem? Here is a detailed breakdown.

1. Give the fans what they want, and some of what they won't expect.

Fans are important in making an adaption but, giving them too much of the game will only make
the adaption lame and cheesy(a la Mortal Kombat 2). Giving them too much new will result in something like Street Fighter the legend of chun li. A generic piece of shit with the video game's name slapped on top. If I can name any video game film that somewhat got this right it would have to be Mortal Kombat 1. That movie managed to not make the costumes incredibly similar to the game which made them cool, but not lame. The story was similar to the original mostly and had a few deviations which was welcomed.

2. Get real actors

One of the huge problems with VG Adaptions is that film makers seem incapable of getting A- list actors. Half the people in the first Resident Evil I've never even seen before.

3.Get a decent budget.

Uwe Boll's films are examples of VG Adaptions that suffered because of not only terrible acting, action sequences etc. but, a very low budget which limited not only the film maker's creativity but, the special fx sequences which would be very very important to a video game film(well depending on the game)

4.Get the feel of the game

One of the most important aspects, try and get the feel of the game, how it looks, moves, sounds. Silent Hill(a much liked and much hated video game film, I'm one of those who likes it), although weak in many areas, recreated the feeling of the game series spectacularly. The film makers even used the game's soundtrack in certain scenes which was a good decision on their part.

Bonus::

Extra opinion by me. The one video game that needs to be made into a film and can only be made by one man.
Halo the movie. Peter Jackson.

I know he was going to produce the movie but, god he would have done such a fucking amazing job directing it.

I have to dissagree here. you don't need A-List celebs to make a good movie. I'd argue that the First RE movie was quite good.

I think the most important thing is that the filmmakers respect the source. they don't have to be slaves to it but they at least have to aknowledge that it exists and has already entertained people by itself. It's the same with any movie adapted form an existing source.

Well, sadly you are missing the most IMPORTANT part of the whole Game/Movie connection.
So many games today are MADE with movie references IN THEM, that it's impossible to tell where the game is original or just copying another movie that has already been made. Look at your example of Alone in the Dark. How many 'jokes' or references to OTHER movies was in that one? How many times are you reminded of a "movie moment" while playing video games. Look at all the "easter eggs" hidden inside of a video game that pop up. World of Warcraft's "Evil Dead" references? Fallout 3 "Gone with the Wind" reference? GTA's NUMEROUS Scarface/Godfather/Miami Vice references?

Video games getting turned into a movie is a BAD idea because 1/2 the games being made are carbon copies of each other, and the other 1/2 are concepts that got TURNED DOWN as a movie and instead made into a Video Game instead. They are then turned into movies only AFTER their 'popularity' as a game takes off, and everyone forgets the movie connections already embedded INTO the game.

Plus, they also forget that the reason a game is popular is because of PARTICIPATION for the person playing that game.

*stands up and appludes* That is a very cool blog man. This is a topic I feel strongly about and I actually did a blog similar to this one. Only I looked at why they never work. It was on the eve of SF Legends coming out and we know how that turned out. Hopefully the day will come when they do get it right.
