Plenty of superheroes will enjoy a brand new cinematic adventure in 2013, but we've still got another year to wait for the latest Captain America outing. We do know a few things ahead of time, however, like the fact that 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' will be drawing its inspiration from, well, 'The Winter Soldier' storyline from the comics. We also know what Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) will be making an appearance as will Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). In fact, we just heard that the new Captain America movie will feature a backstory for Fury. So now that we know who will be in the movie, how about a hint about familiar faces we won't be seeing again? According to a recent interview, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) will not be appearing in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier.' Though no direct quote from the actress is offered, Time Out London is asserting that her absence has been confirmed. The new Cap'n adventure, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, is set to be released April 4th, 2014.
This makes complete sense. Peggy Carter is not involved in 'The Winter Soldier' storyline, which takes place beyond WWII and into a contemporary setting. Therefore, it's sort of a no-brainer that she wouldn't turn up in the movie based on that story arc. What this piece of news does, however, is put to rest an odd rumor. There were rumblings that Atwell would be returning for the sequel, but as Sharon Carter. Sharon was Peggy's niece and formed a relationship with Captain America after his big thaw. So basically we now know that if Sharon Carter does make an appearance in 'The Winter Soldier,' it won't mean a weird performer overlap. Depending on how far into the story they go, they may not need Sharon at all. There's nothing that says they have to stick to every facet of canon and, if memory serves me correctly, she's not that integral to the overall arc. All that being said, Hayley Atwell is gorgeous and magnificent presence on screen. If this report is as certain as it professes, she will be missed.
What do you guys think? Disappointed Atwell won't be back? Think they should scrap any Carter involvement whatsoever? If not, who should play Sharon?

Comment by Microshock on January 3, 2013 at 3:37pm Yes, I'm disappointed. Story wise, I can't see how they'd bring her back but she was very beautiful to look at.

Comment by Richie Vega on January 3, 2013 at 12:10pm Looking back to Captain America... it was an uninspired outing. It had many ingredients to make it good but it was very bland. She was one of the better parts of it.
Comment by JoeDrifter on January 3, 2013 at 10:53am She was fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine in the first one, i'd love to see her as Sharon or maybe an older Peggy. And didn't Whedon shoot some scenes with an Older Peggy for a scene in Avengers, and didn't the Marvel guys say they'd use those scene's for Cap 2??? Aw well...if they do recast Sharon, go with Amanda Righetti from the end stinger of the first film. :)
