2002's 'The Bourne Identity' not only launched a franchise, it also propelled actor Matt Damon to action hero stardom. His amnesic super spy became a character indelible to contemporary American cinema. This proved to be so much the case that even when Damon was out of the picture, the studio put together another film in the series with a different character, and the film still bore the Bourne name. While 'The Bourne Legacy' wasn't exactly a triumph, and ended on a forced cliffhanger, many of us were amiable to the idea of a second 'Bourne Legacy' if it meant the possibility of a Jeremy Renner/Matt Damon team-up. Unfortunately, according to Matt Damon, that isn't likely to happen. The forty-two-year-old actor mentioned in a recent interview that he has some stipulations for his return to the franchise that aren't likely to be met.
"I've always been open to it as long as Paul Greengrass directs, I don't think he's going to do it."
The admirable loyalty notwithstanding, this is not encouraging news for Jason Bourne fans. Damon openly criticized 'The Bourne Legacy's script, written by Tony Gilroy who also directed the film, as being "unreadable." It's safe to say that is both the reason he is demanding Paul Greengrass' return, and why Damon would be left out of the proceedings if Gilroy directs the next film in the series. I understand every side of this situation, but it effectively means I am done with the franchise. Jeremy Renner did the best he could with that clunky, poorly-conceived 'Bourne Legacy'mess, but if Damon isn't coming back, it's time to let this thing die. As Damon himself points out in this interview, the motivation for Bourne was to find his memory and his identity. Now that he has, where else do they really need to go with him?
What do you guys think? Do you think all the pieces will fall into place for Damon to possibly return? Where would they go from where we left off in 'The Bourne Ultimatum?'

Comment by Brian 'Born-a-Bastard' Jordan on October 15, 2012 at 11:43pm Matt's right. The first three are a fairly good action trilogy. How often do we see that? Let the Legacy movie go. Let Renner do something else, he's a good action guy but it's not a good role for him. To keep turning out more Borne flicks just tarnishes the first three. Stop. Everyone worth a shit from these movies go do something else. The studios will find another cash cow.
Comment by BLAM! on October 15, 2012 at 1:56am First three movies based on Ludlum novels. He's dead.
Legacy is based off the cash in on the movies and the rest of the novels after it are also cash ins.
They are all bad thus I don't see good movies being churned out of them. Good job Matt.
"where else do they really need to go with him?"
I think where they can go with it is his survival now that he knows everything. I don't think the higher ups and powers that be will just let him just retire to a cabin in the woods, he knows too much, I think they'll hunt him down and kill him just out of fear of what he knows, or they think he might know. I think they got more story lines left in this franchise with Jason if they do it right it can work and not feel forced.

Comment by Richard Dempsey on October 11, 2012 at 3:48pm These are a tad overrated.
Comment by Obscene Otter on October 11, 2012 at 3:00pm Legacy was lame (plot and it's ending, it just stopped). I wouldn't mind another Bourne movie. Like you know... that actually has Bourne in it and is about the book Bourne Legacy.
Comment by Richie Vega on October 11, 2012 at 2:58pm I frankly don't get where the hate for The Bourne Legacy comes from and I'm happy that way. It would have been neat to see Matt Damon in further movies but the latest stood on its own from my point of view (I couldn't remember much from the trilogy that came before, even while I did appreciate it for what it was) well worth the price of my ticket and my parents's.
That so few people watched Dredd 3D makes me more upset than this news.
Comment by Joanne on October 11, 2012 at 2:50pm The Bourne Legacy was a mess, no plot and a pathetic ending. The only slightly redeeming thing about it was Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz. I can understand if Damon doesn't want to come back. It's bad enough that the studio had to force this recent sequel out to fill up their cash cow.
Comment by Dustin Langley on October 11, 2012 at 2:16pm Bourne Legacy was crap. I don't think we will get the same movie out of a second legacy film because he got his objective and found his pills. My problem with continuing the franchise is without Matt Damon then there really is no Bourne. They wanted Damon in this movie so much that they had him in it, whether it was a photograph or not he was still in it and talked about not to mention the name still held Bourne in it. Renners story line seemed drawn out and boring, it's bad when a half hour into the movie you are checking your clock. Ok that's all I have to say about it.
