When Marc Webb set out to make 'The Amazing Spider-Man,' it was clear he wanted to achieve certain returns to Spidey canon. The first of course was the idea of Peter Parker building his own web-shooter as opposed to the Sam Raimi departure of the webs springing from a gland. The other aspect of the comics Webb wanted to bring back was the idea of Gwen Stacy being Peter's first high school crush, not Mary Jane Watson. Now however, it looks like Webb wants to bring MJ back into the proceedings. Circling the role is Shailene Woodley ('The Descendants'). Emma Stone, who played Stacy in 'Amazing Spider-Man' will be returning along with Andrew Garfield. Evidently the character info sheets have gone out to talent agencies and not only has it been revealed that Woodley is in talks to play Mary Jane, but also that Electro is apparently on the table as a potential villain for the new film. The studio is also on the hunt for an actor to play Webb's version of Harry Osborn. The sequel is slated to swing into theaters May 2, 2014, with production beginning early next year.
I like Spider-Man as a hero, but I'm by no means an expert. But as far the filmic Spidey universe, I already prefer Gwen Stacy to Mary Jane Watson. However, that may be entirely due to my dislike of Kirsten Dunst as an actress. I'm therefore quite excited to see another actress take on the role. As much as I was left generally cold on 'The Descendants,' I did appreciate Woodley's performance and think she's a great choice for MJ. I'm also interested to see who they land for the role of Harry Osborn. My guess is they'll look at someone like Josh Peck. Electro would be a cool baddie, but I don't think that will end up panning out. The stinger at the end of 'Amazing Spider-Man' doesn't lend itself to an Electro reveal; namely because the man in the shadows sounded far too old to be Max Dillion. If he is involved, he'll probably be a secondary antagonist.
What do you guys think? Is Woodley a good choice for Mary Jane? Do you see Electro being the next villain? If not, who?

Comment by GreenEggsAndBam on October 16, 2012 at 3:18pm I heard that Sony is forcing Webb to include Mary Jane in it. I really hope they're not getting into involved in this, remember what happened last time?

@Electro_Robo_Boogie_Bot - How is $753 Million worldwide a "marginal success"? Spider-Man 2 only made $783 mil. TAS was a mega-success for the studio. After you factor in the budgets of the two films, 'The Amazing Spider-Man' made pretty much the exact same as Spider-Man 2 did.
I really dont care about Peter Parker as Spider-man at this point. I've really been getting into the Miles Morales stories and quite frankly i find them much more interesting, so I believe they shoulda just gone that route with these new movies.
Comment by Lastsuperjedi on October 15, 2012 at 12:47am Acting wise, I can't see her as a party girl. She seems more like she should play "nice girl" characters. Look wise, Miss Woodley would make a great Mary Jane if she died her hair red. Ive had a crush on her since I saw a few episodes of "the Secret Life of an American Teenager".
Oh come on! Stop laughing at me! Its a pretty good show.
Comment by kwame digital on October 14, 2012 at 9:54pm I'm confused your introducing a vapid, shallow female lead who has a habit of dating bad boys with low IQ's. I thought that role was already taken by Gwen Stacey. Last movie gwen acted just like mary jane except for the glasses and hair color. From my understanding gwen was supposed to be the sweet smart girl that's to geeky to know that shes actually pretty hot. Oh will i guess i was wrong and Peter has to choose how he likes his self destructive love interest's, Blond or Brunette.
Comment by Pathosis on October 14, 2012 at 8:22pm Don't ask...It was in my head for some reason after reading this article, so I'm sharing it with you... ....Anyway, I think it's a good idea to introduce her character into the fold. Not as a love interest at this point, but just to build on something, seems the most logical way to go about it. After all, if the 2nd installment goes by the source material on the fate of Gwen Stacy, I think it'll feel more natural to have MJ established than just shoeing her in for a 3rd film. What do you guys think?

I see where you're coming from but the truth is the differences in the various versions of Spider-Man are marginal unlike Batman where the jifferences in the character are quite extreme, look at Batman The Animated Series and Batman the Brave and the Bold, I believe it's possible to have a version of Spider-Man that will make everyone happy, look at Spectacular Spider-Man.
Comment by Electro_Robo_Boogie_Bot on October 14, 2012 at 5:42pm The Amazing Spiderman was only a marginal success, because it didn't offer anything new or special. If the sequel's biggest draws are Electro and the return of Mary Jane, this series will abruptly end.
What this series really needs is a good plot revolving around Venom. This series already has a darker tone than the previous one and Venom would fit it perfectly.
I'm sorry, but Spider Man is a character that has changed so much juring the years that there is no "One True SpiderMan". So all arguments of people not liking the new movie because it wasnt the Spider Man they know is bullshit. Because chances are, you've know at least 3 types of Spider Man.
