One of the first things that happened when Disney purchased Lucasfilm last year, and announced they were putting new 'Star Wars' films into development, was that practically everyone associated with any previous 'Star Wars' property came out of the woodwork to declare in interviews that they were interested in, or at least open to, returning to the franchise. This was most likely due to the fact that it became the number one question any interviewer asked them at that point, and didn't mean anything in terms of an actual deal. However, today Latino Review is claiming to have confirmation that Harrison Ford is officially returning as Han Solo. During a televised interview, a spokesperson for the scoop-happy movie news site stated that they apparently have a legitimate source inside the studio and have "triple checked" the authenticity of this bombshell. It is not known at this time whether he will return for 'Episode VII' or one of the spin-offs. In fact, we're not even sure if it will be a cameo or a central role, though the deal is said to be substantial. As of this posting, Disney has not confirmed Ford's return.
So many huge grains of salt here. I'm always weary of Latino Review's scoops, but to their credit, I've never seen them so assured of their accuracy that they went on TV to broadcast a scoop. Granted, if they are wrong, they'll just claim the studio is "false denying." All that said, devil's advocate time, I really and truly hope that Harrison Ford is only returning to the role of Solo as a cameo. I love this character, and I am very much looking forward to a new batch of 'Star Wars' films free of the influence of a completely out-of-touch George Lucas, but the worst thing J.J. Abrams could do at this point is build in a series of winks and nods to the original series that end up being more memorable than the new storylines. Plus, as I've said before, and as much as I adore Harrison Ford, he's far too old to be an action hero anymore. That's not ageist so much as it is based on the woeful 'Crystal Skull' precedent. Hopefully he will be utilized in the same fashion as was Leonard Nimoy in Abrams' 'Star Trek.'
What do you guys think? Are you happy about the prospect of Harrison Ford returning as Han Solo? How big of a role do you think older Solo will play?

Comment by gamesEnlisted on February 15, 2013 at 4:33pm Like you said, if there's anybody who can include an old, but iconic action back into a franchise, without it feeling crammed in, its Abrams.

Comment by kaingerc on February 15, 2013 at 4:05pm does this mean we get to have space cgi gophers, and Shia Labeouf as jacen solo?
Comment by Haze-man on February 15, 2013 at 3:45pm Yay. I'm not a Star Wars purist or anything. I just like Harrison Ford. He was great in The Conversation.

That aside, having him take a role akin to Nimoy's in Star Trek (2009) seems perfect. Ford probably wants to be there less than less than anyone else and having an extended appearance of an old, disgruntled, tired looking Han Solo would do nothing but hurt the new films.
