Happy Madison To Produce 'Summer School' Remake?

Remember 'Summer School?' No, not that thing you were forced to do because you failed Calculus. I'm talking about the 80s movie directed by Carl Reiner ('The Jerk'). The film starred Mark Harmon as a disinterested gym teacher forced to teach an English class over the summer. Well it seems that the movie 'Summer School' is now on track to be just as painful and unwanted as actual summer school. Paramount has apparently been trying to put together a remake of this comedy for years and have entered into talks to take on Adam Sandler's Happy Madison company as a producing partner. Sandler is not set to star at this point and the film is currently sans writers.

Happy Madison has become an easy punching bag of late, mostly because their movies are terrible. I don't even think we need discuss Nick Swardson's uncomfortably inept turn in 'Bucky Larson.' The reason I'm not dreading their involvement in this project as much as I probably should be is that it's hard for me to get excited about a 'Summer School' remake in the first place. It's not so much that I feel the original is hallowed ground upon which no other filmmaker should tread, it's actually a fluffy, basic 80s comedy that doesn't come up too often in conversations about the best of the genre. It's just that the apathetic teacher angle was just explored in Jake Kasdan's 'Bad Teacher' and if I had a nickel for every movie involving a put-on teacher in a classroom full of misfits, I'd have enough to fund the 'Summer School' remake myself. I'm just not seeing what there is they can bring to the table to reinvigorate the original film. I will say that I am pleased that Sandler doesn't look to be starring, but that could very well change.

What do you guys think? Any 'Summer School' fans out there? Are you at all interested in a remake?

I remember liking the original when it played nonstop on HBO yeeeaarrrs back but I found it to be annoying as hell after watching the DVD a few months ago.  Carl Reiner directed much better comedies.  If Happy Madison blows out a decent remake of this, I'll be very surprised.  But I will also write that I can easily see Adam Sandler easily slipping into the Mark Harmon role, even though that doesn't negate my earlier "I'll be very surprised" comment.

I actually liked the original. It was a fun comedy, and I am interested in seeing what is done with it. Now having said that, I am sure it will be bad. Strike one; Remake. Strike two; Happy Madison. But who knows. It might be good.

Cue Co-host rating of "Rental."

Ok going to be one of the few to defend this, I think Sandler might be passed the crappy 2011 he had (Mostly late 2011) Plus I think this is the perfect type of project for Sandler.

What the fuck is up with this sudden influx of 80's remakes? I hope to God we aren't going back to blue eyeliner, makeup on men and fat neon shoelaces.

I love Summer School, <3 Chainsaw and Dave.   I don't see why they want to remake this movie though.
