Warner Brothers, clearly undaunted by the fact that the world is totally going to end this year, has begun to set their lineup for 2013. Particularly, they are focusing on assembling their summer slate. The studio has set Todd Phillips' 'The Hangover Part III' to kick off their summer season, giving it a Memorial Day weekend release. Phillips will once again direct with Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis all reprising their roles. WB has also given an official release date of August 2 for '300: The Battle of Artemisia;' more or less book-ending their season with sequels. Noam Murro will take over directing duties on the '300' followup from Zack Snyder. Warner also pushed Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim' from May to July, probably in an effort to avoid conflicting with 'The Hangover 3.'
What's most interesting about this story is that Warner Brothers' confidence in their 'Hangover' franchise is clearly at an all-time high. This is not a huge shocker in and of itself as the sequel did make over $580 million worldwide in addition to the $467 million global take of the first. However the fact that they are confident enough to put it up against the next entry in Universal's 'The Fast and the Furious' franchise speaks volumes. May 2013 is going to be a huge month for movies as it is, we're getting 'The Fast & The Furious 6,' 'Star Trek 2,' 'Man of Steel,' and now 'The Hangover Part III.' As to the shift backwards for del Toro's 'Pacific Rim,' it would be easy to alternatively interpret this as a vote of no confidence in the film. But what they're actually doing is giving the movie a better chance to compete in July than it would have in May. It makes far more sense, and will be far more lucrative, for 'Pacific Rim' to go up against 'Grownups 2' than 'Man of Steel.' The August 2 weekend of 2013 looks to be all about sequels now, '300: Battle of Artemisia' joining 'Red 2,' and 'The Smurfs 2.'
What do you guys think? Do these moves by Warner Brothers make sense to you? Which of these titles are you most excited for?

Comment by Ruben Baeza on March 24, 2012 at 3:34am Unfortunatley I have no interest in any of these films. 300 was bleh, an action film with gay soldiers fighting in a coffee stained background. Hangover 1 was okay but I still don't consider it a comedy top 10. Fast and furious sequel? You know I've only seen part 1 and I'm not riding in that vehicle again.
Comment by PoisonPirate on March 24, 2012 at 2:44am Really like the first hangover. Thought the second was middle of the road. So yeah, not screaming for a third but will probably end up going when my friends wee it anyhow
Comment by Jamila on March 23, 2012 at 9:55pm I honestly don't mind sequels (this and the previous year has proved that being a sequel does not equal being an inferior movie). However, I really didn't enjoy a lot of the originals that are getting sequels. We'll see, I guess.
