When Guillermo del Toro first unveiled his upcoming "mechs vs. kaiju" project 'Pacific Rim' at Comic Con, the loveably eccentric director was adamant that the film would not be shot or converted into 3D because - due to the immensely epic size and scale of the creatures, robots, and settings - the 3D conversion process would make them feel "miniaturized". The sentiment was applauded by fans and filmgoers alike but in a recent interview, del Toro announced that (after extensive arm-twisting discussions with the studio) his film would indeed be subjected to a post-production 3D conversion. However, Guillermo was enthusiastic about the development, stating that he had certain demands that the studio met:
"What happened was, in the weeks and months following Comic-Con, what I asked from the studio was to agree to four points that I wanted to do... The more the ILM shots arrived, the more I realized that there were only a few shots that would miniaturize. I asked the studio, number one, that we would not hyper-stereo-lize the thing. That we would not force 3D on the beauty shots. That we would keep the giant dimensions. They agreed. Number two, they agreed to something very unusual. Normally a conversion takes a few weeks. I asked to start it immediately so we could take the full 40 weeks to do the conversion. As an example, 'Titanic' took about 50 weeks to convert. The final thing that I asked that they agreed to, which was amazing, was that I asked them to give me an extra budget, which is considerable, to actually have ILM composite the shots that are CG native 3D. We're not giving elements. ILM is giving the composite in 3D from the get-go. That's a huge, huge element. Now I'm going to be involved in supervising it. What can I tell you? I changed my mind. I'm not running for office. I can do a Romney"
The film, which centers around massive monsters entering our world and a team of humans who pilot an equally gigantic mech to fight them, comes out July 12th, 2013 and it sounds like Guillermo del Toro and his team at Industrial Light & Magic will be doing everything they can in order to smooth over the 3D conversion process. It sounds like this was a decision made singularly by the studio (studios love that piracy protection and bigger ticket prices) and del Toro is simply trying his best to make lemonade out of those lemons.

The hate is coming from the fact that it's very rarely done right, thus making the finished product look like crap. Case in point: the Clash of the Titans remake. Yeah, the movie was a polished turd to begin with, but the forced 3D conversion managed to take the polish off of it.

Comment by Jordan Hoffman on September 25, 2012 at 12:32pm I might hit 2D because he envisioned it that way...
But I think people are too busy focusing on the negative here. Maybe it's just because I'm hyped as hell for this movie, I don't know.
This is Guillermo Del Toro, getting MORE money to do the film that he's already said he's going CRAZY with. This is exciting as all hell. On top of that, conversion right away? Not a cheap conversion? Right on! If I do have to see it in 3D, I won't be upset because it looks like he's found a way to find an acceptable use for it.
I don't see this as selling out at all. I see it as EXCITING that he's getting to go even CRAZIER because of it. This is the guy who brought us PAN'S LABYRINTH and HELLBOY2, bringing us GIANT MONSTERS with PRACTICAL EFFECTS fighting GIANT ROBOTS having the "most fun I've ever had making a movie ever".
This is going to be the tits, my friends. And I can't wait to get a peek.

Comment by Joseph E T Hughes on September 25, 2012 at 11:20am Well, shit. Despite his obvious talents, it still seems Del Toro isn't allowed total control like some of the other big name directors out there. I agree, he's doing his best with the hand he's been dealt.
be honest it s because the studio wants the $3.00 extra charge for each ticket ,that the only reason.
Comment by Batfan175 on September 25, 2012 at 8:43am Wow, is there any director besides Nolan who does not sell out to BS 3D?
