For a long time, we've been talking about Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' At first its very existence seemed a far-fetched rumor; was the studio really sinking money into adapting so obscure a property? Once it was fully established, with a release date and James Gunn positioned in the director's chair, the rumors predictably shifted to casting. It seemed everyone and their brother either wanted to play Guardians' leader Star-Lord or were being eyed by Disney/Marvel. Names like Zachary Levi, Joel Edgerton, Michael Rosenbaum, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt began to crop up in the conversation as to who would play the rough-and-tumble male lead. All of these rumors would inevitably evaporate moments after their arrival, but today it appears the long, arduous search is over. Mike Fleming over at Deadline has announced that Chris Pratt ('Parks and Recreation') has landed the gig. Pratt has also appeared in Kathryn Bigelow's 'Zero Dark Thirty' as well as Bennett Miller's 'Moneyball.' 'Guardians' is slated for an August 1st, 2014 release.
Wow, Chris Pratt? That's a left-field choice for a number of reasons. He was one of the few people who was not mentioned during the rumor phase, which just goes to show how rampantly unreliable the rumor phase can be. Also, he's an actor who is far more recognizable for television comedies than for cinematic sci-fi action adventures. Having only a limited grasp of the source material, I can't say for sure whether Pratt is ideal for Star-Lord, but I thought he was great in 'Moneyball' and he is brilliant on 'Parks and Rec.' This is actually a phenomenal opportunity for him to test out his leading man potential. Even though he will headline the a big-budget superhero film, this is still an ensemble hero team and he will therefore not be required to necessarily carry the movie. Given the fact that 'Guardians' will feature no small amount of humor, which also explains Gunn's hiring as director, Pratt landing the job is a bit easier to understand.
What do you guys think? Is Pratt the right choice for Star-Lord? If not, who would you have gone with?

Comment by Luke Hero on February 9, 2013 at 5:06pm Solid choice...need someone with a low profile who is a proven actor...not just some star....they can pay him less and get more money for special effects
Comment by CAboy on February 9, 2013 at 6:03am i kinda wanted joel edgerton to play him, but after reading the 2008 GotG i do think that this guy could do it
Comment by patmander on February 8, 2013 at 7:37am Apperently Marvel Studios loves them actors with the name Chris' in their movies - Captain America, Thor and now Guardian.
Comment by Nick on February 6, 2013 at 10:47pm I just started watching Parks and Recreation today so I just check Chrs Pratt out and I can honestly say he is awesome. I now love the show and have total faith in him for GotG.

Comment by Anthony Stokes on February 6, 2013 at 12:11pm @Jack O'mally To be honest I don't get it, he has a very specific charisma and while i haven't seen a lot of his stuff he doesn't seem to be able to stretch very far or he gets type cast too much
He's an actor on the rise, seems like it would make sense to lock him into something that could benefit from a name that may be mroe popular by the time the movie comes out. and Hey I love Fillion too but dude's gettin' old, even HE doesn't think he can do all the roles people want him to do.
Comment by Jack O'mally on February 6, 2013 at 11:01am @Anthony Stokes I think when it comes to Nathan Fillion, I think it's because he seems like he is a very likable person and we want people like that to succeed. Especially if he/she is into geek culture.

Comment by Wooky P on February 6, 2013 at 8:45am Pratt is one of those universally likable guys, like Mark Duplass and Jim from the office. It will be interesting to see him in a lead role. Solid choice.
