Greatest (Worst?) Disney Villains

One thing that you can always rely on the Golden Age of Disney Animation for is the presence of some of the most memorable villains in film history. The best part about them is that they are each different in their motivations and styles of evil. So with The Princess and the Frog signaling the return to this great style of animation (since Pixar has held a Disney animation monopoly for the past decade), I want to reminisce of some of the villains who have left an impact on me along with their worst point of villainy and I invite you all to share your own opinions about them or others.

Chernabog from Fantasia (1940)

Okay had to look on Wikipedia just to find out this bad boy's name. This character was referred to by Walt Disney as "Satan himself". That alone gives enough credentials to his evil status and confirming my own suspicion and fears when I first gazed upon him. Making his debut in the classic Fantasia, this guy raised an army of demons to the tune of "Night on Bald Mountain" until he was silenced for a moment by the morning sun. Since this classic appearance, he was a boss in Kingdom Hearts and was one of the villains to gang up on Mickey in the live-action show of Fantasmic!

Worst Moment of Villainy: Summoning ghosts and spirits to dance in the night only to plunge them into a volcano resurrecting them as an army from Hell.

Ursula from The Little Mermaid

When I first saw this villain, I was three years old when my mom showed me my first Disney movie. Lord in heaven, was I scared of this fat ass that I had recurring nightmares of drowning because Ursula kept dragging me down my pool. Yeah, I was traumatized by a freaking Disney movie. Thanks a lot.

Worst Moment of Villainy: Forcing a father to choose between his kingdom and his daughter. Then turning him into a sea freak and preparing to bring chaos to the seas. God was I glad when she got impaled by a freaking ship.

Cruella de Ville from 101 Dalmations

Ah vanity, thy name is Cruella. This pale witch had a crazy cackle with her aristocratic cigarette (cementing her as a villain in appearance). I simply hated this witch throughout the film, until the end when she looked like a bat out of hell (that's what I saw her as a scary ass bitch). I have to mention Glenn Close's performance as well as I felt she brought the level of villainy from the cartoon accurately to the live-action movie (which had plenty of other problems).

Worst Moment of Villainy: Orders the kidnapping and execution of 99 dalmatian puppies to make a fur coat for the sake of fashion. Crazy as hell.

Scar from The Lion King

The first villain I truly, TRULY hated. Now I have always had a really good relationship with my dad, so seeing what this son of a bitch did drove me to call for his head. Add on the fact he was a more dangerous and cunning (not to mention more cowardly) version of Claudius from Hamlet. This guy deserved his end at the hyenas he was ready to betray...in a circle of fire.

Worst Moment of Villainy: Killing his own brother to usurp the throne and tricking his own nephew that he had committed the murder. Then ordering for said nephew to be killed after being emotionally traumatized.

Judge Claude Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame

This guy is scary as balls. Perhaps the most psychologically twisted of all the Disney villains, this guy disturbed me with his calls for genocide of gypsies. He closely reminded me of 19th Century Hitler. Add on to the fact he was the most lustful of any cartoon villain, this guy was a force to be reckoned with.

Worst Moment of Villainy: Killing a mother on the steps of Notre Dame Cathedral, then preparing to toss her deformed child down a well. Hardcore.

Ring Leader from Dumbo

FUCK THIS GUY. FUCK HIM IN HELL FOREVER. After trying to protect her son from a bunch of bullies, Dumbo's Mom is locked up by this son of a bitch forcing him to become a loner. Then to add salt to an open wound, he denigrates poor Dumbo by dressing him up as a clown. My parents told me I cried when I saw this scene when I was two-years-old. For that, I only pray that after the events of the movie he degenerated into a life of alcoholism and died alone. Asshole.

Worst Moment of Villainy: Deprieved Dumbo of his mother and then dressed him up as a clown for the rollicking amusement of all.

Hades from Hercules

He's a villain, but God do I love hating him. He's smooth, he's charismatic, and he's voiced by James "Motherfucking" Woods. That alone makes him cool as hell, despite being on fire all the time. Ironically for a villain, the film's majority of comic relief came from him and him alone. Making the film that much more fun, he deserves a mention.

Worst Moment of Villainy: Planning to kill a baby by robbing him from his cradle and forcing him to live his life as a mortal on Earth. Granted, not as bad as the other guys on this list, but I love Hades.

Jafar from Aladdin

The villain from my all time favorite Disney movie. He hits off all the main points a villain needs: cowardice, cleverness, ruthlessness, etc. Add on the fact he had reaffirmed a long standing legacy of king's advisor's being go-to bad guys, this guy has made a legacy.

Worst Moment in Villainy: Using the powers of Robin Williams to take over the land of Agrabah. When you use Robin Williams for evil, you're a son of a bitch in my book.

Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty

The definition and image of a witch I get. Maleficent is the embodiment of all dark magic, not to mention one of the oldest of the villains. It's interesting to note that whenever Disney villains ban together (Fantasmic! and Kingdom Hearts), she's the one to rally all the troops to wreak havoc upon the Disney world.

Worst Moment in Villainy: Summoning the Heartless into the Disney worlds with the intention to destroy all their worlds to harness the power of evil. Granted she did this in her appearance in a video game, but it totally tops wanting to kill a princess baby because she wasn't invited to her birthday party.

So who's your favorite (hated?) villain

Didn't expect you to have the ring leader in there. I thought those booze-drinking clowns were worse.

But yeah, I've always had that appreciation for Disney villains. Frollo and Scar are among my all-time favorite villains, period.
