If it's crap ... We'll tell you

Creative collaborations often define careers for both parties involved. The favorable examples of this can be found in the likes of Scorsese/Robert De Niro, Kurosawa/Mifune, and Hitchcock/Stewart. Though nowhere near as established, it's hard to deny the cinematic spark in the team-up of Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling in 'Drive.' Seemingly on the strength of that spark, two more collaborations were lined up: boxing drama 'Only God Forgives' and the 'Logan's Run' remake. Now it appears Ryan Gosling has exited the latter, though at the moment it seems Refn is still slated to direct. The news was broken via tweet from Variety's Justin Kroll...
"Rough news for those LOGAN'S RUN fans, I can confirm Ryan Gosling is no longer attached to the project"
I'm disappointed by this news...to an extent. On the one hand, it would have been interesting to see what Gosling did with the role especially considering he would again be under the direction of Refn. However, I really didn't understand the impetus for remaking 'Logan's Run' in the first place. It's a barely thought-provoking dystopian sci-fi concept that has actually been explored to better effect in many other books and movies. The appeal of 'Logan's Run' is therefore inexorable from the era in which it was made; the specificity of 70s sci-fi aesthetics. Why then try to recapture that hokey silliness in a contemporary science-fiction flick? This does make me wonder however what is was about the project that made Gosling depart? Was it just his schedule or was there something about the movie that displeased him? If the latter is the case, should we be concerned?
What do you guys think? Does Gosling's departure dissuade you from seeing the new 'Logan's Run?' Were you even excited about it in the first place?

Damn, man, you are trying the soul of a Gen-Xer RAISED on '70's dystopia. "Barely thought-provoking"?!?!? Taking resource scarcity to its logical conclusion point and CULLING YOUR SPECIES while young through massively multiplayer games while clad in togas and hockey masks? c'mon....OK, I'll give it to you that there was a hokeyness that didn't need to be there, but I do entreat you to read the book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logan's_Run. I would REALLY love to see a remake if it stayed closer to source material (one essential ingredient: in the book you get put down at 21, not a Michael York- and Farrah Faucet-accommodating 30, which really allows a deeper exploration of the issues and limitations of youth culture. As such, it matters not to me that Gosling is out--although, it may allow them to rethink this with a youthier lead to get back to book basics.... hey.....
Comment by Obscene Otter on October 25, 2012 at 7:43pm It's sad. But I hope Gosling and Refn work on something else together. There is a sequel to Drive called Driven. So they should do that instead.
Noooooooooooo im heart broken.

Comment by Midnight Mastermind on October 25, 2012 at 3:49pm Ryan probably just found out that he was cast as Batman for the Justice League reboot.
Comment by Dr.DeadVortex on October 25, 2012 at 3:04pm It's definitely disappointing that he left, but we still got "Only God Forgives" for another team-up with them both.I'm actually pretty interested in what Refn could do with this,i like the idea of remaking bad movies into better ones.

Comment by Billy Xan on October 25, 2012 at 2:27pm I thought this project died out a while ago. Surprised to hear that gosling just left it. Anyway like Shadow said the project has been done to death at this point and in some cases even better than the original film.
