If it's crap... We'll tell you

Universal Pictures has given then nod to Gore Verbinski produce a remake of the 2006 Korean thriller The Host. The film, originally titled "Gwoemul," did record-breaking business in its theatrical run in South Korea.

The film will feature the directing debut of commercials director Fredrik Bond. Smart People writer Mark Poirier will pen the script.

Story follows a town terrorized by a giant mutant squidlike creature hatched by toxins that flow into a nearby river from a military base. When the creature grabs a little girl, her dysfunctional family must band together to rescue her.

Bond has directed campaigns for Nike, Adidas and Levi's. He and Verbinski had been looking for a project to do together, and Bond said he embraced the opportunity to mix a larger-than-life monster with a heartfelt family drama.

"It processes a few genres together, and visually it feels close to the stuff I've made over the last few years in commercials, the tonality of humor and the scale," Bond said.

I really liked The Host... if they can't improve on a film, then why remake it?

It's going to be lame, in most likelihood. Giant monster movies just suck when they're Americanized due to the one big cultural difference. These films due well and significantly in Asian cultures because they have experience with getting their asses handed to them by powerful invading forces throughout. America conversely has much more of a conquering mindset, that is, there is nothing we can't do, or beat, or overcome. That's why the American Godzilla became such a weak pansy, why our monsters can be beaten while riding a roller coaster, and why such films become big jokes. Yes, I know Cloverfield was a slight exception, but that was one film and the brainchild of someone with a lot of pull and legacy to convince skeptical studios to buck the trend. They wouldn't do it for anyone else.
