Comment by Sam Hill on February 24, 2012 at 6:50am It sounds like Tyler Perry's overcompensating the drama, like Will Smith in Seven Pounds. I wish him luck with future ventures though, even if he doesn't make a magnificent film, he stands a good chance of encouraging future filmmakers to create diverse black cinema experiences.
Comment by Chaos Jumper on February 24, 2012 at 6:49am I usually see Tyler Perry improving in very small steps. Probably the best film he's made, drama wise, was For Colored Girls, which does show that Tyler Perry really wants to be someone who can direct a movie. His problem lies in his tradition from the stage to film; he makes his stories too melodramatic to the point where it becomes hokey and cheesy. Kind of like seeing a mediocre tv show; too much cheese and not enough meat. If he keeps trying to direct movies to the best of his abilities, and/or find a good screenwriter, he may make that movie one day. But for now, we have to hand with either too dramatic Tyler Perry or too stereotypical Tyler Perry.
