Gareth Edwards' 'Godzilla' reboot has been gaining a lot of steam since its appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con last summer. The film is undergoing an overhaul of a rewrite from none other than Frank Darabont ('The Walking Dead'), and then casting rumors began to come crawling out of the internet sea. First it was Aaron Johnson ('Kick-Ass') who was circling the project like Mothra hovering over Tokyo, and then came the one-two atomic punch of Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston. Now it appears that Academy Award nominee David Strathairn is in talks to join the Legendary Pictures blockbuster. No details have yet been released as to Strathairn's potential character, but odds are he will be one of the unlucky humans trying to avoid being stomped by the iconic lizard. The new 'Godzilla' is scheduled to destroy theaters on May 16th, 2014.
I gotta say, I am really impressed with the caliber of cast they are going after for Edwards' 'Godzilla' reboot. As we've discussed before, it's not enough in a creature feature of this magnitude to only develop the monster; the human element needs to be just as impressive. That was one of the many problems with Roland Emmerich's 'Godzilla.' It really does seem that the new production has made it a priority to enlist actors who have consistently delivered strong performances as opposed to just grabbing whichever big name could help them sell tickets. Strathairn is an actor who I'd always seen in smaller roles here and there, but it wasn't until I saw 'Good Night, and Good Luck' that I really took note of his tremendous talent. He most recently appeared in Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln' as William Seward. My guess is that he will end up playing a military character in a control room struggling to manage the Godzilla response. However, no matter what role he plays, he'll be a formidable asset for Edwards' film.
What do you guys think? Are you familiar with Strathairn, what are your favorite of his performances? Do you think he's a suitable addition to this cast?

Comment by Boatloads1017 on March 14, 2013 at 11:45am I have to say, compared to the previous attempt, this movie already has a better human cast. I just hope they don't fuck up the real star: Mr. Gorilla Whale himself, Godzilla.
Comment by Brian Lloyd on March 13, 2013 at 6:11pm Good casting coming with this (generally) and I'm cautiously optimistic. Been a Godzilla fan since I was little. I just want to see it done well.

Yes, there have been plenty. Just get past the inherently cheesy special effects, and the majority of the Gojira movies (ESPECIALLY the original, there's a reason Criterion put it out) have been pretty great.
Comment by Hogwarts Dropout on March 12, 2013 at 4:14pm I can't quite put my finger on which one I like, but David Strathairn has always been solid in my book.
Comment by Connor D. on March 12, 2013 at 3:55pm While I really enjoyed the design of Emmerich's Godzilla, I agree the movie left a lot to be desired. Fingers crossed on this one!
