If it's crap... We'll tell you

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra: August 7: Movie Season 2009.
3.8/5

Boom Boom Pow. Action, Action and more action. No plot needed here, because there isn’t much. The movie is based off of the 1980’s cartoon and Hasbro action figure line. The movie takes place in the not to distant future where a government weapons manufacturing company M.A.R.S. has created nanotechnology weapons capable of eating away threw any object. While being transferred and sold to NATO, The US Army who is delivering this item is attacked and is mostly killed off for the capture of the four nano missiles. Soon after the two remaining soldiers Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Waynes) are met by the GI Joe force that saved them from the ambush attack. They are quickly some what recruited to GI Joe. From then on out the back and fourth catch me and come get me scenario that takes hold. The bad guys, (Cobra) take the weapons and while GI Joe attempts to get them back.
The movie gains or at least tries to gain depth by adding cheesy and oddly placed flashbacks giving you a background on the enemies and characters. After the 5 min flashbacks are done, we get action, blowing up stuff, destroying buildings, cars, Eiffel Tower and more. From the get go, the movie is action and meant to be nothing but. They don’t try to make this seem in anyway realistic. Just entertaining and non stop action scenes.
At points, the dialogue is just bad, and the direction feels off beat. Along with obvious twist and turns. But every 15 to 10 minutes is an action scene that is unique and never seen before that makes you forget about that.
The movie has many flaws. Where is Cobra getting the funding for an underwater layer with the highest of high tech equipment? They have computer-robot fishes and the layer is the size of Manhattan. Impossible, but you roll with it in this film because it’s just so fun and entertaining. GI Joe is to stop from creating a disaster and protecting right. Joe caused enough damage to make a city go bankrupt. They obviously are determined to stop global destruction because they just don’t give a damn about whos on the road or in the way. Yet that is the fun part of the film, it is a big adventure that you just wish you could do, they make it seem so easy, smooth and sweet.
The evil villain in the worst villain I’ve seen in years. He speaks in generic evil voice tone, and makes gestures of a 1960’s Batman TV series villain. He laughs as if he were Mandark from Dexter’s Laboratory. He is truly god awful at acting and doesn’t pass as even a cartoon villain. You don’t feel intimidated by this character at all.
While some Characters were bland, some where just down right entertaining even without much character development. The suave Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun) working for Cobra is the slickest and just coolest person in the film. He at one point seems to just kill what ever is in his path, until flashbacks give us small background on his rivalry with GI Joe solider Snake Eyes (Ray Park).
The movie ends in a rush, feeling down right cheated out of what was such an entertaining film for the past hour and half. Not really a spoiler, GI Joe saves the day and Cobra is captured, but no doubt a sequel is in store. The Film running at Hour and 50 mins. PG-13, and is the perfect summer film. Excuse….Hear me loud “EAT YOUR HEART OUT TRANSFORMERS”. Michael Bay this is how an action film should be done.
