Before 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' has even hit theaters, co-director Brian Taylor has just netted himself a major payday. Sony Pictures has reportedly offered Taylor a seven-figure deal to write and direct a film adaptation of the best-selling video game 'Twisted Metal.' The game, and subsequently the film, would center on a bizarre sporting event orchestrated by a madman named Calypso that sets people against each other in a death match of weaponized vehicles. The film will purportedly feature popular characters from the game including Sweet Tooth, a maniac clown who drives an ice cream truck, and Doll Face, a masked young woman who drives a big rig. 'Twisted Metal' will mark the first time Brian Taylor has worked without his collaborative partner Mark Neveldine. No word yet as to when 'Twisted Metal' will begin shooting.
So let me get this straight, Sony is paying Brian Taylor a boatload of money to write and direct a movie based on a once-great video game before they've even see the box office returns on his biggest film to date? And they are giving him all this money to do the project without Mark Neveldine? Any success these two guys have had has been a result of their collaboration. Taylor is 100% untested as a solo artist and THIS is the project they hand him along with a great big check? Seems ill-advised to say the least. Not to mention the fact that this plot sounds remarkably similar to the Paul W.S. Anderson remake of Roger Corman's 'Death Race 2000.' Granted, I'm aware that the video game existed prior to the remake, but how is Sony going to make the film version of 'Twisted Metal' distinct from 'Death Race?' I guess I need a little insight from our trusty Spillios.
Do you think a 'Twisted Metal' film could work? Is Brian Taylor the right choice to direct? What game elements need to show up in the film to make it stand out from 'Death Race?'

Comment by Mr. DeViouS on February 15, 2012 at 1:41pm I think for this to work, there needs to be no truly sympathetic characters. I haven't played Twisted Metal since PS1, but isn't the tournament all about people volunteering to kill one another for the sake of a wish? I'm pretty sure there wasn't a single character in the game that was in the tourney because he was "accused of a crime he didn't commit, and is actually just the nicest guy once you get to know him." So I think the best road(s) would be to take a completely criminal cast, and try to bring one character to redemption; or to go the path of 2011's Warrior, and have two slightly not-too-evil characters lead. Ultimately, though, Sweet Tooth HAS to be the main threat, and he HAS to win, because that's the root of the dark humor of the series.
Anyway, I wish this movie luck. Video games need a good representative in film, and this could be so easy, and so fun.
Comment by Ash on February 15, 2012 at 1:35pm I'm excited, I loved twisted Metal. The problem is, Paul WS Anderson, thoroughly ripped off the games when he made Death Race. The freaking movie had weapon power ups, and the Boss from the games a tanked out semi. That man is a massive Hack who can only ever steal from other properties. And I fear that when twisted metal does come out, critics will call it a rip off of death race, when it's entirely the other way around. As for Taylor, his movies have been hit or miss, so we'll see what he's able to do with it.

Ugh...nooo! Twisted Metal Black tries so hard to be dark and serious! I think they should just say fuck it and have fun...old Twisted Metal games didn't give a shit about being believable and it was fun that way!
Comment by Cab on February 15, 2012 at 1:19pm If Taylor follows the story arc of PS2 hit "Twisted Metal Black" I could definitely see it being a successful movie. It's the darkest of the series and a sensible storyline rehash of the characters we've come to familiarize ourselves with such as Sweet Tooth As long as I don't see another Death Race I'll be fine.
Comment by Dr Mercurio Porter on February 15, 2012 at 1:12pm This could work. They have the perfect amount of crazy with one of those guys. Make it like Cannonball Run but with psychopaths and I'd watch it.

I'm currently playing the new Twisted Metal game. Yeaaaah....stick with Death Race. I highly doubt it will be that great of a film, but I am actually a fan (hell I even played Twisted Metal: Small Brawl) so I'll probably watch it no matter what.
