Before 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance' has even hit theaters, co-director Brian Taylor has just netted himself a major payday. Sony Pictures has reportedly offered Taylor a seven-figure deal to write and direct a film adaptation of the best-selling video game 'Twisted Metal.' The game, and subsequently the film, would center on a bizarre sporting event orchestrated by a madman named Calypso that sets people against each other in a death match of weaponized vehicles. The film will purportedly feature popular characters from the game including Sweet Tooth, a maniac clown who drives an ice cream truck, and Doll Face, a masked young woman who drives a big rig. 'Twisted Metal' will mark the first time Brian Taylor has worked without his collaborative partner Mark Neveldine. No word yet as to when 'Twisted Metal' will begin shooting.
So let me get this straight, Sony is paying Brian Taylor a boatload of money to write and direct a movie based on a once-great video game before they've even see the box office returns on his biggest film to date? And they are giving him all this money to do the project without Mark Neveldine? Any success these two guys have had has been a result of their collaboration. Taylor is 100% untested as a solo artist and THIS is the project they hand him along with a great big check? Seems ill-advised to say the least. Not to mention the fact that this plot sounds remarkably similar to the Paul W.S. Anderson remake of Roger Corman's 'Death Race 2000.' Granted, I'm aware that the video game existed prior to the remake, but how is Sony going to make the film version of 'Twisted Metal' distinct from 'Death Race?' I guess I need a little insight from our trusty Spillios.
Do you think a 'Twisted Metal' film could work? Is Brian Taylor the right choice to direct? What game elements need to show up in the film to make it stand out from 'Death Race?'

Comment by Luke Hero on February 21, 2012 at 1:32pm Ghost Rider was mediocre, so it's only logical to think this Film will be equally or maybe even more so Medicore.....I love this game....This is around the time I really fell in love with video games....Twisted Metal & Metal Gear Solid represent what I love about games
Comment by CanadianSpy1030 on February 20, 2012 at 8:44pm I saw this and nerdgasmed so hard that my ass hurts.
Comment by NULLcHiLD on February 19, 2012 at 4:37pm I only played a bit of Twisted Metal Black (which I've heard some people say is the worst) and seen a bunch of gameplay from the new game.
After seeing Ghost Rider, I think Brian Taylor can make a good Twisted Metal movie.
Comment by Julien Hemmendinger on February 16, 2012 at 4:10pm Twisted Metal and Death Race are two completely competitions. One is a RACE. The other is a gladiator style event of car combat in an arena. The only bad news about this is that Taylor is doing this solo. This definitely should be the best video game movie to date. As long as with the intense action they bring that twisted and dark sense of humor, this should deliver. Have faith in those who haven't disappointed.
Comment by The All Father on February 16, 2012 at 11:27am If they make the stories as dark and twisted as twisted Metal Black it could be a great movie
Comment by Ross Mawan on February 16, 2012 at 11:22am Nic Cage for Calypso.
Comment by Carnage Kosmic on February 16, 2012 at 9:33am See the difference between Twisted Metal and Death Race, is the insanity is racked up to 11 for Twisted Metal. I mean a guy who looks like a cross between Ghost Rider and Ronald McDonald who drives an ice cream truck that transforms into a robot if done right will be awesome. Or really really bad. Either way it should be campy fun. Unless Ghost Rider does horrible and the project gets scrapped.
Comment by legend26 on February 16, 2012 at 8:28am The guy was 1 half of crank. this is perfct for him. im excited
Comment by KingParappa on February 16, 2012 at 7:48am Well... Death Race was about... a race. Twisted Metal is a destruction derby without rules. It's Kill or BE KILLED.
Winner is granted a wish... I'm waiting for the trailer.
