If it's crap ... We'll tell you

Many of us were surprised when Gary Ross, the director of 'The Hunger Games,' opted not to return to helm 'Catching Fire.' The question of what his next project would be therefore became doubly intriguing. What endeavor would interest him so much as to tempt him away from a wildly successful franchise? The answer appears to reside somewhere near Neverland. Ross has been confirmed as the director of Disney's 'Peter and the Starcatchers.' Based on the book by Dave Berry and Ridley Pearson, 'Peter and the Starcastchers' is essentially a prequel to the classic J.M. Barrie story of the boy who never grew up. The plot follows our legendary hero as he and a group of orphaned boys wind up on a ship with a woman who claims to be a starcatcher; someone who collects powerful "star stuff" that falls to Earth. They must then do their best to keep the star stuff away from the dreaded pirate Black Stache. The book has already seen one adaptation on Broadway. Ross wants to make 'Peter and the Starcatchers' his next project, eager to get started as quickly as possible.
What is going on with all these fairy tale revisions of late? 'Snow White and the Huntsman,' has already hit theaters with 'Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,' 'Jack the Giant Killer,' and 'Oz The Great and Powerful' in the works. Ok, I know I'm cheating a bit with that last one, but come on, 'The Wizard of Oz' is so much a part of our shared cinematic culture that it might as well be its own fairy tale. I feel like I'm already tired of this trend before the bulk of its fodder has even been released. Gary Ross is a more than competent director, but there's not much about this project that makes him seem like the perfect fit. That is, of course, unless the band of orphans fights back against the pirates with violent tenacity and bows-and-arrows. It'll be interesting to see how this film stacks up against the Sony project 'Neverland,' which is also an alternate take on Peter Pan and is set to be directed by Gavin O'Connor ('Warrior.') I fear we may run into another 'SWATH'/'Mirror Mirror' situation.
What do you guys think? Does 'Peter and the Starcatchers' interest you? Is this the right project for Ross?

Comment by Mst3kFan on August 22, 2012 at 5:26am Wonder if they'll try to get Christian Borle to reprise his role for the film. He did win a Tony for it, after all.
Comment by HudsonsirhesHicks on August 21, 2012 at 9:41pm Its not only the movies, its tv as well. There's Once Upon a Time and Grimm with a new Beauty and the Beast coming soon too. Guess its flavor of the month for Hollywood till they find something else.

Comment by dtk145 on August 21, 2012 at 4:30pm To be fair, I have read the book and it is very great. It gives Peter another dimension than what the movies did. And it is more dark than anything that Disney would be able to portray. But for Ross to direct it? Ehhh. I for one didn't really like the Hunger Games movie. And I have yet to feel that he can helm such a movie. If anything is going to be bad about this movie, its going to be either actors/director. I think the script will be great.
Comment by Lt. Commander Armstrong on August 21, 2012 at 4:03pm I haven't given a shit about Peter Pan for years so if he can make a movie that catches my interest again in the character then I'll watch it.
