Gary Oldman Signs On To 'Robocop' Remake
As you are probably aware by now, MGM is currently in the process of remaking, among other things, Paul Verhoeven's 1987 cult classic 'Robocop.' The new version will be directed by Jose Padilha ('Elite Squad 2: Enemy Within') and will star 'The Killing's Joel Kinnaman as the ill-fated Officer Murphy who is ostensibly murdered and then brought back to life as a cyborg law enforcement unit. Now it seems as if iconic actor Gary Oldman has also joined the cast. Oldman will play Norton, the scientist who creates the Robocop technology but then experiences a moral quandary as to whether to help Murphy regain his identity or ensure he lives up to OCP's demands. The shooting for the new 'Robocop' is slated to begin in September in Toronto and the hope is to have the movie released next summer.
This is great news for the remake. Oldman is a phenomenal actor and has been rather prevalent in the box office world of late thanks to his turns as Commissioner Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Batman films and Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series. Of course, he has been creating unforgettable characters his entire career: 'Leon,' 'The Fifth Element,' 'Air Force One,' all the way back to 'Sid and Nancy.' I like the angle Padilha is taking with the remake, in that he's going to explore the psychological and ethical dilemmas inherent in creating the half-man-half-machine police officer. Sort of like 'Frankenstein.' I'm sure there will be action sequences as well, so fear not fans of violence, but I like that he's trying something new that still fits within the 'Robocop' universe and pursues a specific avenue we haven't visited before. Oldman's casting means Padilha has someone talented enough to effectively take on that approach with poise and lend weight to it.

Fans wont like it because it will more than likely be nothing like the original, I'm not familiar with the director's previous films but he seems to have a good track record. He could easily just make a movie about a cyborg cop and no one would say anything about it.
To put things in perspective, the idea of cyborg law enforcement has been done to death in other mediums outside of mainstream hollywood films. 8 man (which supposedly inspired Robocop) and Ghost in the Shell are good examples.
I take all remakes the same way, it's simply a new film using the title of an older film. Often having a completely different cast and director from the original will equal a nearly completely different film (Good or bad). I think there may be some exceptions but I'm sure they are debatable.
Also, let's not forget that there are also great remakes. John Carpenter's The Thing being a movie that people worshiped and ranted over how bad the "prequel remake" was.
I think the major problem with a lot of remakes nowadays is that most of them are remakes of remakes without taking the original product into consideration. It would be much better to just make a completely original film without adhering to the constraints and subsequent burdens of living up to the original film.
I'm not expecting the film to live up to anything except being a decent film in it's own right. I'll take a complete re-imagining over a sad attempt to copy the original any day.

Robocop is in my top 5 favortie all-time movies, so I'm skeptical of a remake. If the movie is one that can explore territory the original did not, then all the better, but (let's face it) remakes typically do not have a reputation for building on an original work so much as cheapening it. I hope it's good when it comes out. Otherwise, my cynicism regarding remakes will be even stronger.

Look...Robocop was not a "Cult Classic". It was a financial and critical success. It was popular when it came out. Just because something came out in the 80s and has violence in it does not mean it's a cult classic.
