The summer of 2012 was set to be one of the most jam-packed with blockbusters and epic studio undertakings in years. Largely, this is still the case, but one gargantuan sequel on the roster has hit a major, well, Roadblock. Yesterday it was reported that Jon Chu's 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' was pushed from it's fast-approaching June 29th release date all the way back to March 29th, 2013. The reason? They will be post-converting it to 3D. Yup. The studio is trying to capitalize on the 3D craze, especially overseas, and cites Lionsgate's 'The Hunger Games' as evidence that March can be a lucrative month for action films. Oh, but don't worry. Paramount has moved Seth McFarlane's comedy 'Ted' into 'G.I. Joe 2's spot so...that happened.
I don't even know where to begin here. I feel cheated. I very much disliked the first 'G.I. Joe' movie, finding it more exasperating than mindlessly fun, but the marketing for the sequel had me hooked. I was all set to not only give this franchise another shot, but was actually excited to see some of the action set pieces outlined in the trailer. Now I not only get to wait nine more months to see it, but I have to do so specifically because they're post-coverting it to 3D? Yeah, because that worked so well for 'Clash of the Titans.' Sure, I'll be able to see it in 2D when it comes out, but that kind of makes it even more frustrating that I have to wait almost another year for something to be added that I won't even use. Paramount's blatantly greedy decision here aggravates me to no end. Was the movie not slated to make enough money in the summer in 2D? I know it's silly to get up in arms over the 'G.I. Joe' sequel, but it's an example of a larger problem with studio filmmaking right now.
What do you guys think? Are you disappointed you won't get 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' this summer? Will you see it in the post-converted 3D?

Sawtell on May 28, 2012 at 6:07pm The toys are out in the stores, and I figure some restaurant or business dropped cash for a tie-in already... and the studio dumps this flick in 1st Qtr 2013? Going to be interesting if this movie is going to be in the 2013 list of 'worse box office bombs'.
Comment by Herman A. Trass Jr on May 28, 2012 at 9:40am It's hard to be objective but the move makes sense from a business standpoint. But I am not dropping the extra dough for 3D. Not ever
Comment by david chalker on May 27, 2012 at 7:09pm on one hand. why the hell would you do this they must have spent so much money marketing this movie already to pull it now and have to restart a marketing campaign in december is just stupid, but on the other. this is going to be the biggest summer ever and while i don't think the movie would have flopped with all the movies around it fighting for the same box office i could see how people would overlook it, moreso if they didn't like the 1st one. i honesty think its move has more to do with the film being overcrowded then it is about the 3d because it was just about 3d they could have found a spot somewhere at the back end of this year
I'm going to take a less cynical view on this. The fact is that this movie had a somewhat financially-suicidal opening date in front of Amazing Spider-Man. Good movie or bad, it was going to be denied a whole helluva lot of money because of that. I still suspect that the movie is good, and with a March 2013 opening it will be have less competition and be able to kill. Percy Adams or whatever ain't got jack on GI Joe.
Plus, this will hit before next year's Marvel movies, and right now it's lost in the shuffle by three huge comic book films.
Comment by Ivan Perica on May 26, 2012 at 6:02am i was hooked up to see this movie this year. But i am dissapointed ,i was never a fan of 3d technology.and the first movie in this franchise was alright. Now i have to wait nine months to see this film ,which looked great from what i saw in trailers.maybe they were afraid that this movie was gonna be a flop because of avengers and the dark knight rises.
Comment by Negro on May 26, 2012 at 1:45am That's some motherfuckin' bullshit. Plain and simple. Fuck Paramount, and fuck this movie.
Comment by Johnny Rico on May 25, 2012 at 11:42pm This was an odd decision to make less than a month until the films release. And this isn't a small film this is a big name franchise that has a lot of promotions and merchandise. I'm sure toys have already been shipped.
I've heard it's also being delayed to march to capitalize on The Rock being at Wrestlemania again next year...but really? Do they think the WWE crowd is going to give it that big of a boost? And do they think WWE fans don't already know the rock is in it?
The movie looks much better than the first one, but I think they want to have a better 2nd/3rd weekend. The 2nd week they would be going up against Spider-man which is a huge box office draw, and then The Dark Knight Rises is 2 weeks after that.
Comment by Ezmeraldo15 on May 25, 2012 at 10:07pm Even though I didn't have much of any intention of seeing this film, it seems like there taking this 3D thing too seriously, I mean the movie was supposed to come out a month from now. Honestly I've never really seen a movie delay like this, besides Man of Steel which was slated to be released Dec. 2012, but now it will be summer 2013. This was announced way sooner though than what they've done with GI Joe 2.
Rule number one for Hollywood: Don't Convert 2D to 3D during post-production. If you want to make it 3D, you should of just filmed it 3D. One day, you guys will get it I hope.
Comment by Tom on May 25, 2012 at 7:40am If they made a good movie in the fucking first place, they wouldn't have to worry about getting stomped. The bar has been raised, Hollywood! Quit putting out garbage.
