Free Medea??? Ummm....how about showing us the movie instead.

How do you promote a film that, while nearly critic proof, won't be shown to critics anyway? Hold a mock protest instead...

FREE MADEA!

MADEA, America's favorite irreverent, pistol-packin' grandmomma, is raising hell
behind bars and bringing together a community of fans to lobby for her freedom!

Who: LIONSGATE, Soulciti.com, Collegemoviereview.com and Archive Lounge
and local Austin City residents join in solidarity to peacefully protest the
wrongful incarceration of beloved Madea. The general public is strongly
encouraged to attend. The first 40 participants will receive a free t-shirt.

When: Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 PM

Where: outside Archive Lounge
6406 N. IH 35, Ste 1600
Austin, TX 78753

Visit www.myspace.com/freemadea or text MADEA and your zip code to
43KIX (43549) for rally locations across the country, to download materials
and to find out other ways you can join the fun!

ABOUT THE FILM
At long last, Madea returns to the big screen in TYLER PERRY'S MADEA GOES
TO JAIL. After a high-speed freeway chase puts Madea (TYLER PERRY) in
front of the judge, her reprieve is short-lived as anger management issues get the
best of her and land her in jail. A gleeful Joe (TYLER PERRY) couldn't be
happier at Madea's misfortune. But Madea's eccentric family members the
Browns (DAVID and TAMELA MANN) rally behind her, lending their
special "country" brand of support.

Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Joshua Hardaway (DEREK LUKE) is on
the fast track to career success. But Hardaway lands a case too personal to
handle - defending young prostitute and former drug addict Candace Washington
(KESHIA KNIGHT PULLIAM) - and asks his fiancée and fellow ADA Linda
Holmes (ION OVERMAN) to fill in on his behalf. When Candace ends up in jail,
Madea befriends the young woman, protecting her in a "motherly" way as only
Madea can.

MADEA GOES TO JAIL in theaters nationwide on February 20th!

Ummm...okay. If you're a Tyler Perry fan, this could be fun. But not coupling it with some kind of screening - in other words, inviting people out to promote your movie for you sight unseen - well, not sure how that's gonna fly. Might make the 10 O' Clock news, which I assume is the hope. I'm curious to see how this plays out, but can say I'm honestly miffed that they won't screen this for us. But if you go, please take photos and post a report.

...whatever. If I dont hear anything about a movie, chances are I wont go see it. Maybe that's too much of a "scientific" approach, but it works for me.

Thanks Surga. *cheers*

I was trying to say that in my first post. I didn't think I needed to re-explain myself but I did anyways cause I DO value Carlyle's insight into cinema (except when he's chastising me about horrible films). *shrug*

Again, I am with you in your disapproval. Hell, if I was a critic I'd organize a boycott of any one doing this.

However at the same time, some names will always make their money back from their niche fan base.

This film doesnt need to be shown to critics...Tyler Perry makes his money from making cheap movies to a specific audience..For instance in his first move "Diary of a Mad Black women" he used his own house to film..To me its seems he doesnt need or care about what critics will say..Most likely because most critics will tear it apart...

Besides, you're not hurting for something to write about so why even blog about it?

On the day it's released, 50 you tube reviews from amateur with a camera and a gimmick will "spill" his/her every thought. I'd rather hear you review and blog about more obscure films like Let the Right One In. Had you not mentioned that film, I would never have looked for it.

But Medea? C'mon...every one is going to have a say about this. If I was a critic, the only reason why I would want a pre-screening is so I can cash in on it from my subscribers.

No, Carlyle I think you're missing my point. My point was Tyler Perry thinks you need him more than he needs you.

You said it yourself ANYONE can be a critic. The institution has become the de-centralized Electoral College. A hundred gimmick ridden personalities with semi-credible resumes on why their word should matter. So this idea that critics promote a film? Not completely true.

As far as promoting the film, he doesn't need to. This is not Waltz with Bashir. He's Tyler Perry. We all know the Medea character by now. I can't look without Medea Goes to Jail posters plastered on every wall in Manhattan. And it wouldn't shock me if Chicago, LA, Dallas, Boston, and every major American city has the same thing going on.

I don't think it's very respectful of the institution of movie critics. Personally, I think it SUCKS because more often than not movie critics are in his corner.

This is not a Uwe Boll production. I think he'll get away with it because he has every talk show in his back pocket plus, he keeps his budget tight.

Once again Detfink, you completely miss the point. The film is critic proof, as I said. You don't need us to tell you if its good. However, if you want everyone to know your film is out, showing it to a few thousand people nationwide ensures that people see the name over and over again in newspapers and on websites Friday, even if they don't read the reviews...it's basic marketing.

Some films aren't that complicated to understand. I don't need a critic to tell me if Tyler Perry's latest film was any good. In fact, most mainstream films are about as complicated as Liam Neeson's lecture to Batman about the criminal mind.

I loves me some Tyler Perry. I will be in line to see this film. I don't expect it to be any better or worse than his previous films. He pretty much just says what he wants to say while having fun with culture.

Why would they not want the publicity, whether it be good or bad that comes with screening a film to critics?
