Found Footage Movies Get Twisted In 'Category Six'

Have you ever found yourself hopelessly unable to decide between watching 'The Blair Witch Project' and 'Twister'? A common conundrum, I know. Well it appears New Line Cinema is taking steps to ensure that you will never face this tough choice again. The studio has just closed deal purchasing a spec script by writer John Swetnam for 'Category Six.' The film is a first-person, found footage disaster movie revolving around a group of high school students doing their best to survive the worst tornado in American history. Todd Garner will produce.

I know what you're thinking, and you're right, found footage movies have been done to death. But the thing is, almost every found footage movie made so far has dealt with the supernatural; ghosts, demons, possession, etc. The idea of a found footage natural disaster movie is, if nothing else, a interesting twist on the subgenre. In this day and age, when it comes to catastrophic natural events, we get as much first-hand footage from cell phones and personal videocameras as we do news cameras so seeing first-person POV accounts of a massive tornado is therefore not outside the realm of reality. Having lived through a few tornadoes myself, I tend to find them a lot scarier than any ghost or demon. Color me intrigued.

What do you guys think? Would you be interested in a found footage natural disaster film? Or one capturing a different disaster?

i hope the biggest tornado in the american history would wipe out the annoying teenagers into dust, and the camera miraculously captured all of the footage. now that's a movie right there!

I want Cloverfield 2 and then the found footage genre put to bed for a decade so we can all have a much needed break and it can come up with some good ideas

It almost feels like they wanted to do a found footage video for Katrina but the producers said it would be insensitive so they just made it the large tornado. It seems like production companies have found their happy medium with found footage films where they've gone from being this new take on film making to an ace in the hole. If found footage films never evolve, then every company can spend $15,000 on the film and make like 200 million. I for one really wish that either A. they cut found footage films all together or B. they turn it into a legitimate genre where creators are allowed to experiment and found footage films are used for a thousand different reasons.

@usesoap yes i realize its fiction but when it comes to "Found Footage" its meant to sell you on the premise that these events"actually" happen so how r u to believe that a kids camera could survive this trully devastating event.oh and as for the writers doing something different well  Todd garner has his hand in the project lets take a look at his stunning track record of films such as The Zookeeper,The Sorcerers Apprentice,Paul Blart:Mall Cop,Knight and Day and who can forget that badass action movie Next.So yeah i think the writers are totally gonna blow me away since hollywood never follows the same formula when they do a found footage film.

so before u defend a film take a look at wat ur defending and "do a little thinking"

@Mystery Man 129

I see no reason why your questions should raise any concern about this movie,

1. A tornado may be random in principle, but its progress can be tracked easily. They don't suddenly teleport right next to you just when you think everything is ok. But yes, I hate when movies do that, I see it coming from a mile away and I hope this movie doesn't do that. That being said, I see no reason why figuring your way around or away from a tornado cannot be intense and scary.

2. Who knows why they have a camera, maybe they're shooting a movie for a school project, maybe it happens during a school play and one kid has a camera, maybe the writers have come up with something that you haven't thought of. Whoa, strange thought there.

3. It's fiction, does it really matter whether the camera survives? Can't we just be the lone viewers of footage that, in this alternate reality, may or may not have been seen by anyone else? Stop whining.

I suggest that before you condemn a film to failure you at least do a little thinking. On another note, it sounds like if you combined Cloverfield and Super 8 and replaced "giant alien monsters" with "big ass tornado" you'd get this movie. A rip-off? Maybe, but I see potential.
