Daniel Day-Lewis' celebrated ability to disappear completely into his characters appears alive and well, and his words hit with the measured power befitting of one of history's greatest leaders. It's also a tremendously well edited trailer that showcases, among other things, 'Lincoln's phenomenal supporting casting. Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jackie Earle Haley, Jared Harris...and that's just to name a few. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think.
'Lincoln' hits theaters November 16th

Comment by OverlyWhiteMale on October 1, 2012 at 10:01pm I love Lewis's voice for Lincoln. It feels authentic, and it's close to historical accuracy. I got chills, too. Just that little bit of Lewis's performance was incredible.

Comment by Hendrix on September 17, 2012 at 5:58am From that trailer alone I see this film is getting the Braveheart/ Inglorious Basterds style of historical reimagining. Lincoln was not this countries greatest abolitionist. There were many black and white men that fought for independence men like Fredrick Douglas even escaped slavery and became a famous historical figure who sadly seems doomed to obscurity despite his many accomplishments and natural fit to the subject matter.
This movie however seems like it will run the sappy route of creating Lincoln into the fulcrum for abolition and ignore the many who fought and died along the way. The thing that I find most distrurbing is that with so many period pieces there are no natural roles for black actors but in a drama that is aparently focusing on abolition and the civil war the only shots we get are of some unknown black actors giving the "gee thanks masa salute" to Lincoln, a man who historically was opposed to slavery but not the inequity of the situation facing black americans...
Some of his less then genius quotes are....
“I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.” – Abraham Lincoln in his first debate with Stephen Douglas in the campaign for the United States Senate at Ottawa, Illinois on August 21st of 1858.
“I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races. I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people. And I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will ever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. … And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” – Abraham Lincoln in his fourth debate with Stephen Douglas in the campaign for the United States Senate on September 18th of 1858.
“I have never had the least apprehension that I or my friends would marry negroes if there was no law to keep them from it, but as Judge Douglas and his friends seem to be in great apprehension that they might, if there were no law to keep them from it, I give him the most solemn pledge that I will to the very last stand by the law of this State, which forbids the marrying of white people with negroes.” – Abraham Lincoln in the fourth debate with Stephen Douglas.
If this movie does the man justice and showed a developing man struggling with the common views of the day and his own apathy into the man he eventually became with a backdrop that included the other members of the abolitionist movement I might care. However a glorification of the man that said these things with a blind eye to fact or reality would be just another miseducation similar to what you see happening in many schools that are dropping african american or latino studies in favor of a white washed history devoid of our culture and achievement.
To do the same with the most contentious issue in american history despite Lincoln being the obvious focal point of the move to me is unconscionable. You cant tell this story without trudging the depths of it. You can't put a clean face on systematic rape, torture, castration, and total family destruction in the form of a thankfull head nod from a union soldier ignore all that happened then go weap over Lincolns corpse in a movie theater like he was the one to have the worst of it just so the fears of the public arn't realized and white guilt gets a pass for the evening.
Spielberg did an uncompromising movie with Schindlers List that showed the depth of nazi cruelty. I fear we wont however get a real sense of the cost of slavery that is getting touted as this films focal point just a fluff peice that makes Lincoln look like a hero. Considering the uncompromising truth would do more for this society that is increasingly reverting civil rights and laws to meet an increasingly conservative radical movement, that is a shame.
All I can say is if your telling these peoples stories (see pictures) their faces need to be in the movie , not just yer white knight...unfairly reported history is not history it is propoganda and a misguided effort that leads us back down the same roads in our society that end with a dead Trayvon Martin or New York Stop and frisk laws is not entertainment it is a travesty....

Comment by Todd A. on September 16, 2012 at 3:48pm Looks really good. Hopefully it is better than War Horse which I found really sappy.
Comment by Batfan175 on September 16, 2012 at 3:08pm yeah, yeah slavery bad...abolish..blah blah blah.....seiously, can't American studios do films on other preseidents or explore other political themes? Yeah this looks nice and all but i know how it ends and I know what it's about without having seen it. if they'd chosen a different president facing a different sort of conflict i might be interested but as it is this is just another bit of escapism for Americans to forget about their current economic inequality and the fact that the US is not that country anymore. It's not the haven of freedom and i just can't buy into romanticised views of America anymore.
Wait and see how good this is going to be. Remember, WAR HORSE????? AND WHO DID WAR HORSE????
