Film Version Of 'The Giver' One Step Closer To Reality

Remember that Lois Lowry book 'The Giver?' Sure you do, you probably had to read it in school. It's the story of a dystopian future in which the whole of human history, all our collective memories, have been erased. People have been converted to a "sameness" that, while eliminating pain, places all people under strict control that dictates nearly every aspect of their lives. A young boy is suddenly presented with the knowledge that he is to become The Receiver of Memories, someone burdened with keeping the total of all human history. For years there has been talk of a movie version of this story, but nothing concrete ever came of it. That is, until now. The Weinsteins and Walden Media are talking with Phillip Noyce ('Salt') to direct the filmic adaptation. Jeff Bridges, who incidentally owns the rights to the book, is set to star.

It really has been an uphill battle for this adaptation. Bridges bought the rights pretty much as soon as the book was published and Lowry herself has often expressed doubt that the book would ever make it to the screen after having read various incarnations of the script. I am quite excited that things finally seem to be progressing on this project. I read the book many years ago and, I'm sorry to say, I couldn't remember too much about the plot. However, one of my favorite types of fiction is the dystopian future story. The idea of a society achieving apparent tranquility and prosperity through the surrender of basic human freedoms and/or emotional experiences is frightening, poignant sci-fi. There seems to be a great deal of interest of late in the idea of dystopian stories and/or futures involving less-than-ideal circumstances for children. 'The Hunger Games' books of course, and now 'The Giver,' but we've also got Lionsgate's adaptation of 'Ender's Game' in the works. I'm not terribly familiar with Noyce's work beyond his 90s thrillers 'Clear and Present Danger' and 'Patriot Games.'I will say Jeff Bridges will certainly make a great lead.

What do you guys think? Anyone with fond memories of the novel excited that the film is on track? Want to make a case for another director and/or star?

@Matthew Mustin.  Well it is defiantly not a Dystopian future

omg i LOVE "The Giver"! It's one of my favorite books! I think it would be cool if it got a movie adaptation :)

@LastSuperJedi That's ENTIRELY what the book's about.

I didn't even know they were trying to make this film. Awsome!

Dystopian future? Someone possessing all of humanities memories? I don't remember the book being about that. I think I need to read the book again.

As long as they don't attempt to dumb down some of the heavier psychological parts then I can see this being good.

Never heard of this book

I don't have high hopes for this as an adaptation. It's one of those books in which one of the biggest reveals simply cannot be translated into film. I mean, it could, but the first major thing that the boy discovers about the world - indeed, the thing that makes him the candidate for becoming The Receiver - only really works in book form. In a film, it would be blatantly obvious from the get-go, and thus wouldn't have the impact the story deserves.

It has potential. I loved the book reading it through my 5th grade class and now to see the works of a movie adaptation, I gotta say I wanna see it happen. As always though...don't fuck it up Hollywood =/
