Rapper, celebrity, and media mogul Snoop Dogg has been announced as the star of an upcoming biopic about musician/pimp Fillmore Slim. The project - produced by Ames Universal and SRI Entertainment - marks the rapper's first role as the leading man in a feature film since 2001's forgettable 'Bones'.

Slim (AKA Clarence Sims) is a blues vocalist and musician who - during the 60s and 70s - was also a notorious pimp, earning him monikers such as "The West Coast Godfather of the Game" and "The Pope of Pimping". Born in New Orleans, Sims grew up in a culture of music and struck out on his own to make a career. He met several celebrities along the way such as Etta James, BB King, and Dinah Washington, before succumbing to the allure, money, and power of pimping. After cultivating a stable of prostitutes, Sims effectively took over the prostitution business on Fillmore Street in San Francisco (hence the name) and effectively ended his musical career. Previously highlighted in the 1999 film 'American Pimp', Sims estimated that over the course of his career he managed anywhere from 8,000 to 9,000 girls.

In the late 80s, after a short stint in prison for attempting to buy a forged passport and leave the country, Sims rebuilt his life and once again discovered his passion for music. Several albums later, Sims still performs live at blues festivals all over the world.  The biopic based on his life is scheduled to begin pre-production this December.

This is probably my favorite piece of film news since we learned that Chris Evans would be Cap.

"first role as a leading man in a feature film"? I guess they never saw Bones. I know I like to forget I ever watched it sometimes too.
