It's that time again folks, the Family Guy has finally gotten round to doing he last of their Star Wars paradoies and believe me when I say this, the title says it all dudes, because this is a trap and I fell in it. This latest effort by McFarlane and co seems rather lazy and half arsed, well it is lazy and half arsed, The makers tell you straight up in the opening crawl that this latest offering is not that good because 'FOX made us do it!' basically, and it's not some elaborate super joke they've cooked up, it's the plain truth and nothing but, because throughout the viewing you'll have the feeling that the makers couldn't be arsed with it and it shows.
My problem with It's a Trap! is the writing and jokes, it varies between very funny and go fuck yourself. The overall design is very true and faithfull to Star Wars, if nothing they have done a great job of recreating the look of Star Wars, but like I said that's not the problem here.
The jokes here are very hit and miss at the best of times and at the worst of times, its just plain insulting. In the first half they resort to the time killing super annoying Conway Twitty cut away gag, only this time it 'Darth' Twitty! because they've superimposed Vader's helmet onto his head; not funny in the least and it's actually kinda sad. But that's not the worst of it, the biggest 'fuck you' is during the spoof of the Sarlac scene where they poke fun at the nodding of acknowledgement of Luke's rescue plan, I did not find it funny, it pissed me off. All of you Family Guy fans might find it funny at first, but the joke goes on way too long, to the point where I was screaming at my laptop 'FUCKING GET ON WITH IT!
To further illustate the laziness and general half-arsery, you've Peter as Han Solo and the Giant Chicken as Boba Fett, this can only mean one thing; EPIC FIGHT! right. right? Well no instead of some super cool fight between the two, the Chicken Boba meets his end in the Sarlacc OFF SCREEN! Han/Peter turns around and asks 'Hey where did he go?' someone replies 'Oh he fell'. Fuck you Seth McFarlane. It's not total crap mind you, one of the moments I laughed my arse off at was the when the Vader/Stewie provokes Luke/Chris into fighting him by taking the piss out of Seth Green (the voice of Chris if you didn't know) and his semi-mediocrity. The speeder chase (done with bicycles) was funny and engaging and the Ewoks and Rebels fight with the Empire is handled very well (these Ewoks aren't cute and cuddly). In fact the second half of it all was funny, like how 'Blue Harvest' was funny, did the writers suddenly decide to put some effort into this and give us something to laugh at after a lame first 20-30 minutes!? Too little to bloody late.
Family Guy presents: It's A Trap! lies somewhere between a very low Matinee and Rental, many of the jokes fall flat in the first half hour but the second act is where the real laughs are, so much so that you might as well fast-forward through the first 20-30 minutes to get to the good parts, the ending where they poke fun at Seth MacFarlane brought a smile to my face. Well that's it people, peace out!
