Just when you thought movie concepts couldn't get any weirder, we get stories like this one. Elijah Wood ('The Lord of the Rings' trilogy) has just signed on to the independent thriller 'Grand Piano.' In the film, he will play a formerly-renowned concert pianist who has had to take a five-year leave from the spotlight due to crippling stage fright. When he returns to give his long-awaited comeback performance, it's clear he's become the target of a madman and must now play the best concert of his career or else he and his wife will die. Yup. 'Grand Piano' was written by Damien Chazelle ('The Last Exorcism 2') and will be directed by Eugenio Mira ('Agnosia'). The film is set to begin filming late this summer and will be shot mostly in Spain.
I'm sorry, what? This movie is being described as "'Speed' at a piano," and I can't stop laughing at that conceit. Granted, I like Elijah Wood, and I'm really looking forward to seeing his 'Maniac' remake, but was there really a faction of the population laboring under the delusion that concert piano needed its own action film? Of course, without seeing the finished product it's hard to know for certain exactly how this will play out, no pun intended, but it just sounds like a desperate pitch more than a solid foundation for a film. Maybe we'll get lucky and the madman will actually be a demon who is forcing Wood to play the best song in the world lest his soul be eaten...a la Tenacious D.
What do you guys think? Could this bizarre concept yield a quality film? How fast will he reasonably be asked to drive that piano?

If the piano goes below 88 keys per hour it blows up!
But seriously, sounds more like a thriller or possibly a better version of Phonebooth to me than an action movie.
Comment by Mike on May 3, 2012 at 11:16am Any crazy concept can be executed. It just matters who's behind and in front of the camera. Compare Batman & Robin with the Dark Knight, same concept but different execution.
Comment by Tony*22 on May 3, 2012 at 1:12am I love the idea. Sounds kinda cool and actually somewhat eerie. Hey, hollywood has come up with MUCH weirder and incredibly STUPIDASS story plots in the past, so this doesn't sound that far-fetched to me at all.
Comment by NeoSpearBlade on May 2, 2012 at 10:45pm Like the concept (it's different, at least), but I have no interest in seeing it......unless this is in it:

Comment by Arsène Lupin the Third on May 2, 2012 at 1:02pm He looks intense in that picture like he's from a 90's videos music video see:
Just stick that picture of him above in to this video and it fits perfectly.
Comment by Joobless on May 2, 2012 at 12:47pm That sounds disappointingly little like Speed on a piano :(
I envisioned a piano that you had to keep playing on at a certain tempo or else it would blow up. I'd totally watch that movie!
Comment by Kyle Voltti on May 2, 2012 at 12:21pm dang I thought it was going to be a sequel to Grand Torino
