If you haven't been to the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles (I am woefully in that boat myself) you are truly missing out. Next to my beloved Alamo Drafthouse, the New Beverly may be the best place in America to see a film. No small part of that accolade is thanks to their commitment to classic film and their frequent celebrity guests. Recently, Edgar Wright - the director of 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' - hosted an evening of films he had never before seen, but that had been on his "must-see list" for years. For Wright, a regular guest at the New Bev, this is a change-up from his typical M.O. of showcasing his favorite films; ones he had viewed repeatedly. During the event, Edgar told some stories and relayed some interesting career information. The most intriguing of these nuggets of info was that he had written a musical...sort of. He admitted to the crowd that he had just finished a script that was "kind of like a musical" and that most of those who had heard about the concept told him he had to watch the 1964 film 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg;' serving as the impetus for the film's inclusion in Wright's New Beverly slate.
Call me a fanboy, but I would kill to see an Edgar Wright musical. Music already plays such a pivotal role in Wright's films, and the preponderance of foot-tapping, fist-pumping musical numbers in 'Scott Pilgrim' would certainly suggest the man has the talent to pull off a full-scale musical. As to 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,' I must humbly admit that I have not seen it. However, in looking at the plot synopsis, it appears to be the pop-opera love story of a couple separated by war and familial expectations. Wright admitted at the event that the new script was a departure for him, so perhaps its the apparent serious tone of 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg' that is drawing comparisons from those who have read Wright's new script. In any event, this is very exciting news and we will keep you up to date on any further developments.
Is anybody else excited by the prospect of an Edgar Wright musical?

Comment by Sean on December 24, 2011 at 12:45am Edgar Wright is making a musical?
That's it, I'm in the Matrix, aren't I? Reality couldn't be this kick ass.
Comment by Doc Horrible on December 23, 2011 at 8:56pm Like Ramirez said I thought he was working on the Ant-Man movie.
He co-wrote the story for Tin Tin, I believe. That might sate your hunger for Wright. It has got the Simon Pegg factor, as well!
Comment by Ramirez1838 on December 23, 2011 at 1:47am What happen to Ant-man?
Comment by Joe Joeson on December 22, 2011 at 8:34pm Edgar Wright could be working on taking a shit in his pants and I'd be interested. Ticket money already set aside.
