Ed Helms To Play Rusty Griswold In 'Vacation' Sequel

Our little Rusty is all growed up. As was reported several months ago, New Line Cinema has decided to move forward with another sequel to 'National Lampoon's Vacation,' which for my money is one of the funniest movies of the 80s. The new film would follow the adult version of young Rusty Griswold as he attempts to take his own family on a trip across the country. As you would image, mayhem and disaster ensue. The film will be directed and written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (the pair previously wrote 'Horrible Bosses'). Now it seems the man chosen to slide behind the wheel of the Griswold family truckster 2.0 is none other than Ed Helms ('The Office'). Once the deal is completed, the production will shoot to begin production next spring; giving Helms time to finish both 'The Office' and 'The Hangover 3.'

Once again, I think this a pointless sequel. Sure, people will go see it because it's a name they recognize, and branding is so much of Hollywood's strategy anymore, but without Chevy Chase, this is just another arbitrary vacation mishap movie. There have already been a number of films since 'National Lampoon's Vacation' that center on the hijinx of a family trip, and there is no way they will be able recapture the spirit of what made the Harold Ramis original so incredible. I don't have any problem with Ed Helms, I think he's a competent actor with legitimately impressive comedic skills, but it really wouldn't have mattered to me who they cast as Rusty...I still wouldn't care. Plus, I'm sure the thinking behind casting Helms is "oh, he goes on a trip and has misadventures so 'Hangover' fans will definitely come see it if we cast an actor from that movie." All that said, I've been wrong plenty of times before so this could be good. I guess what I'm saying is, I just couldn't care less.

But what about you guys? Anyone legitimately excited for another 'Vacation' sequel? What do you think of the casting of Helms?

I don't know, with all these reboots, remakes, sequels and spin-offs, not to mention rip-offs. Can't we just get an original idea together, a theme and some competent people to work off that original idea so they can make a movie that stands on its own two feet without having a shadow of another famous film cast down on them?

so i'm wondering, is the character of Rusty Griswold the James Bond/007 of comedy characters? because fuck there is always a new one in every movie.I would bash this but atleast they are continuing with a character versus out right remaking it, we will see what happens.

@Ferry2dead

I don't get it.

It could be good, I think I'll reserve my judgement until I see the damn movie. Just because it has Ed Helms in it doesn't mean it's going to be The Hangover. He's been in other movies. I like the casting choice, and they even got the writers from "Horrible Bosses". Crossing my fingers...

Meh, it could be the same old same old or, if done right, depict the generational differences between family vactions of the 1980s with the 2010s.  The father and son dynamic reflecting what happened in the previous films.  The son also reflects what his father went through and the father either adjusts or laments to what currently constitutes as a family vacation.

I don't like this actor and I too agree with goatsey

Whoever wrote this does not know if the spirit can be recaptured so I don't know why they said it. While it's obviously highly unlikely, as a kid whose black father made him watch all of the family vacation films as a kid, no one more so than the first, I don't see why it can't be amazing. Maybe I'm just less jaded but I hope it's great.

No one is asking for a sequel for this movie.  Oh let me guess he is taking his family to Vegas and he can't remember what he did with his car keys so they can't get home until they retrace their steps to find them. OH SHIT SPOILER!!!! SORRY!
