'Eastern Promises' to get an unexpected sequel
The 2007 critically acclaimed Russian Mafia hit will continue its story.
According to MTV News, director
David Cronenberg is planning to work on a sequel to
Eastern Promises, a film about a British midwife's interactions with the Russian Mafia in London. A sequel popped into his head after he had done some more research on the Russian mob. Cronenberg never had the idea to do a sequel before, but he claims that "
in this case, I thought we had unfinished business with those characters. I didn’t feel that we had finished with Nikolai and we had done a lot of research that was more than we could stuff into that one movie.”
The ending of the first film gave us a pretty strong twist, and the fate of Viggo Mortensen's character was left unresolved. As for pre-production, Cronenberg told MTV that "
We are moving forward with it. We are going to have a meeting very soon between me, Steve Knight and Paul Webster to discuss what the script would be. I have some very strong ideas about what I would like to see, but I would like to hear what they have to say as well. And then after that, if all goes well, Steve goes away and writes a great script. If we all like it, we make it.” It is unknown whether the rest of the cast will return since the sequel will probably focus more on Mortensen's character.
'Eastern Promises' was one of my favorite films of 2007. I loved the ambiguous ending, so I have mixed feelings towards a sequel. I do, however, want to see the fate of Mortensen's character because after the film's twist, everything was cut short. David Cronenberg is an amazing director though, and he really cares about the material he puts out, so maybe we might get a good sequel. I'll definitely check it out though. Can the Eastern Promises sequel pull off a '
Godfather Part II'? What do you think?
Read the article here (Warning: It gives way the twist from the first film):
Eastern Promises Sequel
Note: I know the sequel wont be as good as
Godfather II, but I'm just wondering if it will live up to its predecessor or maybe even raise the bar.
