Duncan Jones To Direct 'World Of Warcraft'

The videogame movie revolution continues to surge. Ubisoft has created their own in-house offshoot company to develop films based on their properties 'Assassins Creed,' 'Splinter Cell,' and 'Ghost Recon.' They've netted big stars like Michael Fassbender and Tom Hardy for those projects. On top of that, Scott Derrickson ('Sinister') is directing a film version of 'Deus Ex.' Now, it appears one of the most successful multi-player online role-playing games is getting the big screen treatment. Legendary Pictures is adapting Blizzard Entertainment's 'World of Warcraft' into a movie, and Duncan Jones ('Moon') has just been tapped to direct. The game takes place in the fantasy world of Azeroth, and players develop characters over time; gaining experience points as they take on various quests. Charles Leavitt ('Blood Diamond') has penned the script for the adaptation, but details are being withheld. Legendary is aiming for production to begin this fall ahead of a 2015 release.

This is great news, if a bit baffling. Duncan Jones is a fantastic director, and one who understands the concept of working within genre to communicate intimate, thought-provoking character stories. 'Moon' was a triumph for many reasons, not the least of which was the fact that Jones did so much with such a limited budget and a small scale. It didn't hurt that he cast Sam Rockwell, but Jones proved himself to be a masterful storyteller right out of the gate. For a project like the 'World of Warcraft' movie to net Jones bodes quite well for its quality. It is however an odd choice for the studio. Though he did make 'Source Code,' a step up in in terms of ambition, 'WoW' is potentially still the biggest thing he's ever tackled. One wonders if this massively multi-player online game will be matched in scale by the movie, which would be new territory for Jones, or if he will be allowed to tell a microcosmic fantasy tale. Either way, I have to applaud Legendary for this bold and inspired director choice.

What do you guys think? Are you excited for a 'World of War Craft' movie? Is Jones the right choice to direct?

Well...hmmm...the biggest obstacles I see for this film is the studio and the fans. At barely 9 million players, WoW doesn't have the biggest of fanbases...and the many, many players that do NOT play WoW HATE this MMO. Now when it was a RTS, it had a decently developed storyline, if full of stupid...but the MMO's story is...a bit bare bones by typical fantasy MMORPG standards. Worse...the game looks like a cartoon. Seriously, the graphics are LAUGHABLE, cartoony and over the top.

The other problem is the studio. They KNOW that they can't sell a massive blockbuster film on the fanbase, so they'll need to create something for the mass market. So folks, what fantasy series of late that have been successful could they emulate...and thus CHANGE...the WoW movie into to make money? Expect a few CGI companions and a very grey, gritty LOTR-like world.

even the hope of seeing such a great director attached isn't enough to get me excited in the least

Fuck this I want that movie Jones was talking about when moon came out called mute, really not a fan of that much fantasy let alone one that will be based on a video game

Story is going to be generic as hell. Blizzard did fuck up Starcraft 2 story making it boring and generic, they ruined Diablo 3 with pathetic story and killing one of most loved characters.

Not even Duncan Jones can save it.

And with $100 million budget i doubt that we will see much of taurens, orcs, trolls etc... you know the whole point of making Warcraft movie is to have great creatures and races involved in story. I am sure we will end up with couple of human going on an adventure, and from time to time we would be abble to see some night elves and taurens in the background.

I'm thinking that an anthology film would be the best. There was a 5 volume manga series called Warcraft Legends. It covered different characters, factions and places like Karazhan, Andorhal and The Argent Dawn, Hemet Nesingway, Darkmoon Faire, Winter Solstice, Scarlet Crusade, Bloodsail Buccaneers, the genocide at Draenor and The Headless Horseman.

Basing it all on a single stroy won't make it feel much like a world. Besides the main plot was never much to begin with.

You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.

This is their chance to make WoW's "story" remotely interesting.

Lol at the guy saying that WoW destroyed the game's story. Like there was much story from an RTS. Besides it was just the same people writing the same story except they got a chance to try and flesh out the bare bones from the RTS.

Still its not like everyone playing the game is in love with its story. So doing the most developed story lines are an option (like Arthas), but that would need a sequel or trilogy tbh. OR they would take a basic concept everyone is familiar with and start a story from there. I'd prefer that since a story fitting of a movie's 2 hour time constraint could be made.
