Does Fox Need To Find A New Director For 'Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes?'

One of the surprise hits of last summer was 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes.' The sequel/prequel/reboot, let's just say franchise entry, turned out to be far stronger in terms of story structure, performance, and emotional weight than anyone had imagined. Commercially it also exceeded expectations by raking in a cool $481million. When the sequel, 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,' was announced, it caused no small amount of anticipation. However, rumors have surfaced that 'RotPotA' director Rupert Wyatt, who was set to helm the next installment, may be departing the project. The studio is refusing to comment, but the supposed inside source is citing discomfort with the release date deadline as the reason for Wyatt's potential departure. The film is set to be released May 23rd, 2014.

Again, this is an unconfirmed report, but it would disappoint me to no end if Wyatt did not direct the sequel. So much of what made 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' work was its outstanding performances, particularly from Andy Serkis who is acting from beneath layers of mocap apparatus. Obviously it would be marginalizing Serkis' talent to give all the credit for his acting to the director, but we've seen plenty of good actors hand in lackluster performances when under poor direction so credit must be given where credit is due. It would also be of benefit to the budding new franchise to maintain the specific tone that 'Rise' strikes; something not easy to do with a change in the director's chair. All that being said, it's far from usual to have different directors helm different entries of a film series, and that can sometimes yield positive results. In fact, my favorite entry from the original Apes franchise is 'Conquest of the Planet of the Apes,' the fourth film that was directed by J. Lee Thompson and not the original film's Franklin J. Schaffner.

What do you guys think? Would it be detrimental to the new Apes franchise to lose Wyatt now? If he is in fact leaving, who would be your choice to replace him?

They should keep Wyatt on and move back the release date.  The distributers moved back Deathly Hallows and it just made the anticipation greater.

Led Andy Serkis direct!

Empire Strikes Back wasn't directed by George Lucas so there's another note for the different directors, better film entry.

Yeah this is a shame, hope they get a good replacement.

Sad, but it's okay if James Franco is left out too

Andy Serkis for me. If he can manage to both act and direct I would surely give him a chance.

I actually like the title. In my opinion, after this new one, they should make a final film that somehow links every entry of the series together, giving the series a true conclusion. The only film in the "Planet of Apes" series that I dont like is the second, but I personally think the writing stayed strong in every film. The only problem with the original series that I have is that after the second one, the budget went down on those movies, ALOT. The writing stayed strong, its just that the effects got worse and worse. And I HATED the remake from like 10 years ago, despite the improvements in effects. "Rise" redeemed the series for me, and like I said, they should do 2 more movies, ending the series with a stong conclusion.
