D.J. Caruso, the director of 'Disturbia,' 'Eagle Eye,' and 'I Am Number Four,' is closing in on a deal to helm an upcoming sci-fi disaster film entitled 'Invertigo.' The plot centers on a lost NASA probe that returns violently to Earth harboring a "dark energy" that suddenly inverts the planet's gravitational pull; buildings now float in the air and major bodies of water rain down on our heads. The protagonist of the film is a supervisor from the (we-promise-it's-not-FEMA) Office of Emergency Management who, along with his team, must venture into the now upside-down New York to save the day. The script was penned by Ehren Kruger ('Transformers: Dark of the Moon') and producer/screenwriting noob Bradley Cramp, and will be produced by Neal Moritz's Original Films. 'Invertigo' has already been given a release date of March 7, 2014.
While the plot sounds somewhat intriguing, it also sounds like a weird mash-up of 'The Day After Tomorrow,' and that scene from 'Inception' wherein Ariadne is messing with her own dreamscape. Hopefully, there will be enough dazzling special effects and memorable characters to allow 'Incep-tigo' 'Invertigo' to stand apart. Unfortunately, I can't speak to D.J. Caruso as a director. Somehow, and this really is a mystery to me, I haven't seen any of his films. Wait no, I take that back. I've seen 'Two for the Money,' but I have to believe at least of few of his most recent crop are better than that, right? Still, my biggest concern with 'Invertigo' isn't the person sitting in the director's chair, it's the writers...or more to the point, Ehren Kruger. So they've put the mastermind behind 'Scream 3,' the 'Transformers' sequels, and 'Reindeer Games' in charge of the story? Forgive me if I'm not leaping for joy.
What do you guys think? Would you be interested in seeing 'Invertigo?' Is D.J. Caruso a good fit to direct? Thoughts on Kruger?

Comment by Mike on March 29, 2012 at 9:32pm All science fiction movies sound dumb on paper. We'll just have to wait and see.
Comment by OneironauticalOne on March 29, 2012 at 9:23pm Just going by the limited synopsis above, wouldn't over half the population of earth including animals die after being flung into space? The idea sounds pretty fucking stupid but the silly nature of it makes me want to see how they go about explaining it..
Comment by Exploding Knees on March 29, 2012 at 8:43pm This sounds to me like a bunch of guys got really high and one of them said "Dude... what if like, gravity flipped and the entire world was like, floating and shit?" And then they made a movie out of it.

Comment by Richie Vega on March 29, 2012 at 6:08pm Totally agree with Blue Hunny
This isn't sci-fi, it's fantasy. Much of what is considered sci-fi is more fantasy than science come to think of it.
Not that it is less fun...
Comment by Blue Hunny on March 29, 2012 at 3:00pm Call me crazy, but the opposite of being attracted to the earth is not floating stably somewhere above the surface of the earth.
Comment by MaxJayJay on March 29, 2012 at 2:37pm Haven't we already got a movie coming out about being upside down that is literally called "Upside Down"?!
