Now that i got your attention…
Disney is making there very first “black Disney princess movie” and as a young black woman I should be excited about this...right?
Unfortunately, I have a functioning brain so that isn’t quite the case.
First off, I don’t think little black girls need Disney to provide them with an African American representation of a princess.
1) Its not as if the previous princesses are known for being the best role models: helpless, weak, reckless, stupid, insecure, brats, in pedophile relationships, into bestiality, rape victims, …well you get the picture.
2) There are African fairly tales, plenty of them. Any parent who wants there kids to feel better represented only needs to put in a modicum of effort. But hey this is America, right? All our favorite fairy tales are of European descent. Well I grew up with a black version of pretty much all of the classic fairy tales. My point is there are and have been plenty of “Black Princess” that little girls can easily access.
But those are just my reason for not being excited. Its more than that, I am actually trepedatious about this film.
Disney has always been the slickest of the slick when it comes to black people. I mean how many black people can you think of from a Disney animated film?
Oh well there’s this of course
In a world were everyone has proper British accents there is a tribe of slack-jawed jiv/gibberish talking monkeys, who just want to be men.
Just monkey's right? Well the Jungle book was written by Kipling (author of the jungle book) the same man who wrote The White Man Burden. And King Louie is in no way connected to the famous Jazz musical Louie Armstrong. But your right, your right bad example How about this?
By the way? The one in the striped shit, his name is actually Jim Crow
Still bad examples, right? I mean those are animals.
Come on lets think of one that has actually black people. hmmm hmmm oh i know, Dumbo again!
Oh what a great little diddy that is, sing it with me. "We work all day we work all night, we never learned to read or right were happy hearted roustabout!” *whistles*
Well with that kind of history, i can't wait for this one!
And when Disney tackled other ethnicities they did such a good job, right?
Like Aladdin! Oh that was my favorite movies as a child.
It started off on the good foot too. Do you remember that song at the very beginning of the film? That Catchy little jingle “Oh I come from a land, from a far away place, where the craven camels roam. Where they cut off your ear if they don’t like face its barbaric but hey, its home. When the wind's from the east and the sun's from the west and the sand in the glass is right...”
Its like a warm hug from your mom isn't it?
Oh and do you remember how in Peter Pan all the little boys and girls of the world learned about Native Americans Indians? Ya know, stuff like what makes them red...
Oh that one is especially close to this little black foot woman heart (that’s right folks i am Native American too)
So lets reexamine the facts about film. It involves a black women who at some point kisses a frog, takes place in New Orleans *cough* Katrina *cough* , and the villain? Well she’s a voodoo priest of course!
That’s not all though. The 2d animation so many of us grew up on is being brought back. Visually, it looks amazing. I mean check out some screen shots
Oh wait, how'd that dragonfly get in there?
[Just be Happy i left the overt sexism out of this]
In all honestly i really hope the film is amazing and that Disney inst continuing there not to glamorous tradition. Disney is a staple in our culture, i would love to see a great movie that this generation can look back on years from now and not be disappointed like i was. Please Disney, please prove me wrong!
I never dissed the Princess and the Frog, i just said why i am concerned about the movie. Like i stated at the end, i genuinely hope the film is good, i WANT to be wrong.
And thanks for correcting me about the villain, i based it off an early report that said it was a woman.
I just think considering everything that happened in New Orleans after Katrina and the fact that it is still in a terrible condition New Orleans is a touchy subject.
Well, you know Disney of the old days, it's a sad story.
But focusing on "The Princess and the Frog" maybe you're dissing this movie way too soon, and it's something that many people has been doing ever since they announced they had it in production, why not wait until the movie is out, and once we all watch it we can all complain as much as we want. I'm looking forward to the movie, I do hope they have improved their storytelling abbilities, because God knows Disney lately really sucks at it.
By the way, the villain it's a he, not she, and just because of Katrina New Orleans cannot get some representation?
You forgot about Atlantis...How dare they make that Black guy a smart and interesting doctor (who is incidentally half native American too?), who in the end is the one that has the most moral character... and the lead female...what the hell was she doing...playing a smart and independant woman who kicks ass!!! Outrageous...
But I do agree with you on the earlier stuff.... pretty bad.
